Chicks sound just like chew toys to dogs. You may not have a problem with him at all. It sounds as though there was an opening large enough for the chick to fit through.

Dogs are going to be inside more often now and tomorrow I'm getting the materials to set up a mini electric fence around that particular pen so this doesn't happen again. The other pens are solid unless one of the dogs learns how to tunnel thru concrete they are SOL

As if today could get any worse I had a roo that was supposed to arrive today and guess what? The post office lost him! He's not here and they don't know where he is other than he left Ohio last night and hasn't been scanned as arriving anywhere...
I ended up crying at the main post office today just out of frustration between Willow and now MIA rooster. The operations manager is supposed to call me tonite if he shows up on the next flight.

The strange thing is the shipper sent other birds further away and they arrived on the next day. And checking the USPS site showed only that they had moved through the PO in TX and then . . . nothing. I got the phone call they were in, still showed having gone through TX PO and nothing else. I got the birds from my local PO and the site said they were in a completely different city and not in their pen eating and drinking.

I am so sorry for your loss and especially with the frustration added on top of that. Have you heard anything?
We don't have dogs but it makes me worry about having silkies outdoors. I keep trying to convince my hubby to let me create something in the garage that we can take out when it is nice and then put them back, but I don't think that's going to work.
I have 4 silkies in the brooder, and I was thinking of using a Step 2 playhouse as a coop for them with an adjacent pen. It's 4x5. They won't go out for another month or so and the weather will be nicer, but I'm wondering about how they are with weather being cold, etc. Right now the nights have been around 50 and days 50-60... it only gets as cold as low 30's in the Winter and in the summers it's usually 70's-80's... we do get hot here and there into the 90's but not often or consistently. The area we would put them in is mostly shaded but does get some sun. Should I worry about temps with them or provide extra protection from the elements more so than I do with my standard birds? My other girls have been in the coop with no added heat, they go out when it is sprinkling... they don't seem to mind. I just don't know if silkies are different?
Any tips?

Yay!! He's here!! I got to go pick him up at the main post office that's next to the airport tonite at 10pm. They made a special accommodation for me since they knew I was so upset in general and worried about him. Whew I'm so happy and he's beautiful!! Now just gotta get thru two more shipments (tomorrow and next week) and I'm done for awhile getting any chickens sent to me through the mail. Too much stress for me and them! I'll hopefully be hatching out some fuzzies soon as well, can't wait! Tomorrow is lockdown for my first set I have 15 that looked good on day 15 hoping for a good hatch

I think the general consensus is silkies are pretty hardy as long as they aren't wet/damp and they are in a coop that is free from drafts. I live in the desert pretty much and I'm decently confident with some accommodations when it gets up to 80-90++ my silkies will be fine. It also on occasion will hit 0 degrees here. That isn't normal for this area so the last time it happened a lot of people lost birds to the cold.
If it happens again I plan to bring mine into my garage with space heaters. I have two big dog kennels and I'm planning to scoop up a couple more whenever I find a good deal that way I'm prepared in case the weather gets crazy again next winter.
