teresaann24 have you ever gone to Brown Egg Blue Egg site ? by Allen Stafford he has awsome helpful information on his site for treating silkies for kinds of stuff . I found it a couple years ago and it has been very useful . ~~ Tammy

Okay Silkie people, here's a question... First, the background. We are allowed 6 hens in my city. I currently have 5 hens and 5 chicks hatched by my broody (ssshh!). Also, no roosters are allowed. The chicks I have are: black copper marans (pretty sure a roo), BO (could go either way, but we already have one), splash cochin (looks pullet, but I also have one of these already), and two white silkies, gender undetermined as of yet. I have a cochin/Ameraucana mix hen that is broody all the stinkin' time, so I'm not really interested in any more broodiness, which I understand silkies are pretty well known for. I want eggs. Are silkies decently good layers? I dunno; just trying to decide who to keep. The kids want to keep a silkie because they're cute. What other redeeming features do they have?

Here's a pic of my little fuzz butts. They are currently 6 1/2 weeks old, but are 5 weeks in the pic. Also, any gender guesses from this outdated pic?

Thanks!
Angela

I've had silkies for 2 years & decided to try an experiment. To see if my white cockerel is dominant or recessive white I put blue & black hens in with him. My white chicks hatch smokey -- I sometimes can't tell if they're splash. Well the down on these babies is pale smokey, but I can see slight chipmunk striping on them. Going to legband them today so I don't lose track of them. Has anyone ever seen this & what do they feather out like?

I'll try to post pics of the white over bbs chicks later.

I'm kind of in the same boat you are, I have two white hens and a splash roo. I started hatching earlier this spring and so far all of my babies have been smokey gray. As they start to feather out, some stay light in color as if they might be splash while some darken up like they might be blue or black. I was hoping to get some whites out of my trio, but it looks like I won't. Keep us updated and I will do the same.

Most of my whites hatch smokey anyhow, so if I have eggs from the BBS pen & the White pen in the bator, I have to wait to see if they feather out white or splash. The next batch, I'll hatch in a separate bator. I'm going to put the girls in a separate pen to clear out this weekend.
