Silkie thread!

Are any of there showable. I know one has too small of a crest and another's beak is the wrong color but the one up front and the red head in the corner both have nice fluffy crests and good toe separation. The one up front don't usually hold her wings like that but they are normally held up tight.

And this guy, he's a calico, right?

This hen is actually black, it was bad lighting and flash that made her look lighter. She also has good toe separation

Technically any of them are showable that don't have DQ's I think your black pullet is a cutie give her a bath and get her all nice and fluffed up and she'll probably be who I'd show if I had to pick from the pictures. The last one looks to be blue to me. I would call the roo a partridge but I'm not really up to date with the calico color so idk but I think he's pretty!

Your black looks to be very nice quality. Also the last picture she looks to be blue.

I trimmed her vent feathers last week. I was told my whites eggs where not fertile so I trimmed all their vent feathers and decided while I was at it I would do the b/b/s side so she got a trim too. Not as well as the whites because all the b/b/s where fertile. I just didn't want to take the chance of them becomming infertile.
I suppose those will grow back by september?

Was that roo a calico? I have him in with those 4 I put up a pic of. They aren't laying yet but thought they could get familiar first. You know, at least date first. If you think thats a bad idea I can put him with my 2 white sizzles and see what happens. They're in molt right now but it will be soon. One of them is already laying eggs. My whites are recessive black. Everytime I put them with a dark roo the chicks turn out dark if not shiny black and always frizzled. Except for noel. I don't know what to call her color. It's definately penciled. Here she is

Here is Moe and Curley. Moe is up front and curley has a crest. Oops, thats not Curley behind Moe. It's the blue cockerel silkie I kept from my juvies for the sizzle pen. Curley looks like Moe bit he/she has a crest and lighter color and a tad smaller.

We went to a sale last weekend and had no intentions of buying any more right now much less another roo but we thought he was so pretty. I think his comb is right and one foot does not have good separation of the toes but he is a nice bird and we thought he is pretty too. We had to keep telling each other the pros and cons and the pros won. DH is such an enabler.

BTW - what is DQ. I know your not talking about icecream

Oh sorry DQ's means disqualifications. Also I've been told that many judges are not as concerned about toe separation as they are about other things. I wish my DH was an enabler he's the exact opposite! lol

I'm trying to learn as much about how my chickens should look for showing. I gets bits and pieces here and there. I would love to be able to have somebody that knows shows come out and show me with my birds. like what I need to change and what to keep. Fill me in on all the things a judge could and will look at and for. I know some more now than I did,,, say 3 weeks ago. But I keep asking and putting the pics out there looking for advice. The closest show to me is 2 1/2 hours away. And it's in september so I have time to prepare the chickens I have for it. I want to bring all I can with me. I don't want to bring any that will be disqualified. I was told that "split wing" would get disqualified and wrong beak and skin color. I believe all my roos have nice combs. Not too big and shaped right. They have what looks like little horns at the top corners. If I could show my favorite roo I'm almost sure he would win but his colors are wrong. I think he's the prettiest one I have and he just loves me. If they judged on personality and frendliness he would win. He doesn't get mad when I mess with his girls. He will stand and supervise but thats it. He trusts me completely.

I'm rambling again.

Anyway, I have 2 blacks just like the one in the picture ut they're only about 4 months old. But they are beautiful. I'm thinking they may be cockerels. I noticed someirridescent blue on a wing. Not sure it it was on both of them because they stay by each other and with the coop still covered, I can't go into the run to catch them to find out.

Does anybody know of where I can look for the informaiton I need that explains these things on silkies? I've looked and with dial up it takes forever. I end up givinh up and turn to my BYC friends to help me

Read as much as you can. Go to a show and check it out. Even enter a bird or two just for the experience. My first show was the Ohio National it was fun and I met lots of silkie peeps. It was awesome...
