Ok on another note I've had 2 medical problems with my silkies and I wanted to share a couple of sites I found to be very helpful . The issues were 1 - ear canker ( by the way is ear mites in bedded in their ear 2- I'm still not sure what to call it other then head injury to a chick as it hatched . I do know now from many resorces that chickens do not get wry neck or crooked neck those are deases of another animal completely different ( I'm not going to argue this point ) what happens is simular but not the same .
1st -- American Silkie Bantam Club - I asked for help and had some awsome advice given to me . Where better to go then to those that have been breeding and raiseing silkies for advice on silkies .
2nd--animalpetdoctor.homestead.com -- they had some very helpful medical treatments - that I did apply
3rd-- The Easy Chicken -- On there web site I found very valuble information - How to give an injection was priceless ( I've never given a chicken a shot before and need to if I was going to help my little hen .
4th--X-Treme Game Birds & Poultry -- They have a Meds and Dosage chart I found useful
I lost 1 of my little chicks and the other is doing great !!! My hen that had ear canker is doing great also . ( By the way no matter how much you do to protect them from mites -- mites can still get to them . I didn't know until I picked her up because a roo was bothering her . I noticed her ear was swallen like a marble - I didn't know what was wrong at first . I thought she had syst . She felt light - I checked her over for mites but couldn't find a bug anywhere . I use Ivermec liquid and poultry seven dust on them and their dust bath -- I also use diatomacious earth in their shavings so as far as I was concerned they were safe from mites . It was research and asking questions . Then A call to my vet ( I always do that last -- he really doesn't know how to treat chickens -- so search out remedies and advice then he helps me with what be a good treatment ) That I discovered what it really was . It was a wax ball the size of a marble I had to remove . Yuk -- God Love her -- it smelled awful and wasn't easy to do .
Sorry if I've gone on more then I should but felt this information could be helpful to others ~~ Tammy
Would Any Of You Breed A Calico To A Partridge Or Are They The Same. I Was Told That The Calico Had Genes Of Partridge. I Think I Should Only Do Partridge To Partridge...........
I am fairly new to silkies and have 2. I have a solid white named Sascha and a barred/cuckoo silkie named Roberto. They are 6 weeks old. Oddly enough, Sascha is about half the size of the other silkies that hatched at the same time. I don't have pics of Sascha yet, but here's Roberto:
