Wow its nice to see what a Lovely flock you have keep up the great work!! Simply beautiful!

Thanks! I have so many more birds that totally deserve a photo shoot just got to drag my butt outside and starting clicking away again. I can't claim any of these guys as my own hard work though since I didn't breed them myself but hopefully next year I can brag a bit

I'm so distraught at the moment!!!! Several apparently did not have enough sense to come in out of the rain last night and died. Beginning to think I'm not cut out to be a chicken lover. It's turned out to be a very tragic/costly mistake.......

Can anyone tell me what color this rooster is? I thought he was blue and today i noticed all these red feathers popping up in random places? Weird, never seen this combo....He's a feed store baby so...umm..i guess theres no telling LOL

I think he's a splash, not sure about the red spots. I have a splash cockerel that has an overall red coloration to him so I'd be interested in others responses. This is my guy, I'm not sure if he will serve a purpose for me to keep. Also it was a windy day, so pics aren't the best.

Yea they do look alot a like, mines just younger and his red is brighter....and hes dirtier after all this rain weve had! LOL

oddly carolina chicken keeper, my game hens, and bantam game roosters all decided to stay out acting freaked in the storm... the orginal hen who is super broody (and even tries to brood my hand and the one bantam game hen... poor thing!), stayed in the dog/hen house and made a racket though, while the others whined. i know she didnt kick them all out, as the other hen who is black, but with green instead of slate legs, is allowed to brood also, but was back and fourth. or should i worry, and will the head hen kick others out of nest area? silkies with chick fur staying drenched/soaked= bad like babies would be i take it? or are they dumb and look up like turkies and no sense to come in? just asking in case i come across some non O'ber poofy headed ones (imagine they cant see and forage well with q-tip heads).

I am so sorry for your loss I have too lost some that would not come out of the rain and also died. Its very heartbreaking thats why I always make sure everyone is up before dark. Lesson learned I always say...A very Hard lesson to learn.

Hi Coli, I am also in Texas how do you keep your silkies cool in the Texas heat? I just got 3 Silkies they are still chicks but with the coming summer I am just curious how to keep them cool in the hottest part of the summer? Thanks!

Oh yes the Texas heat! I live in a desert climate being this far west, which is both a blessing and a curse. Dry heat, so I think it's more tolerable at the high temperatures but it's still darn hot and dehydration and overheating are a big deal. This is my first summer with silkies so I've only dealt with temps in the 90's so far. They have done fine in the 90's with just shade and plenty of fresh water. I've seen them panting so I know they are hot but they also aren't used to this climate completely yet so I try and watch them closely. Sonoran might respond to your post if she sees it, she lives in a similar climate as I do so she might be able to give better first hand experience. What I plan on doing is beefing up the shade in the runs with some wooden blinds, freezing 2 liters and bottles and taking them out on rotation to set in the shade and to add to their waterers. My coops have pretty good ventilation so hopefully that won't be a problem but I'm not opposed to setting up a box fan or something to give them a breeze in their runs during the day. I've also heard giving them a shallow pan of water to stand in helps to cool them off as well and misting them.

I did that last year for my standard chickens and ducks with the frozen soda bottles in their watering pans I just wasnt sure if extra care was going to be needed with Silkies being much more fluffier than standard chickens or not.

I love the big pictures I notice someone mentioned Hughes internet Satellite thats what I am on too lol

Today we had a bit of an over cast so things are rolling around slowly but I manage without a problem. I like the bigger pictures cause you can see more.

How do you go about making porcelain in a silkie? I am really interested in them but they seem to be going out of my price range since a rooster is going for like 180$ and it still has one day left and there was a hen that went for 200!!! so i thought it might be cheaper to make them! (and fun
