Silkie thread!

I am really excited!! Last week my first silkies hatched. I ended up with 18 but lost 1. Out of 2 dozen purchased eggs, I thought that was splendid for shipped silkie eggs! Yeah breeders with strong healthy breeding chickens.

Now I have 8 dozen more hatching. They were supposed to hatch tomorrow but my first Kelar chick hatched already (a porcelain). I couldn't be more thrilled! I also have CJ eggs that have pipped and Sheri Minkner eggs working on hatching.

I have a question. I read that some of you let the chicks hatch in egg cartons with the bottoms cut out. Do you leave the eggs upright in the carton? The way they sit in the egg turner? If so, do you ever help them once they have zipped? I decided to try it that way and have 1 chick that has zipped but it is not getting out of the egg. Are they supposed to be laid sideways?

Hoping for some feedback from those that use that method.

Thank you,

Julie

I've used both methods Julie and I'd say not to touch the chick and let it do it's thing. Just keep the humidity high and don't touch the lid

The only time I've ever helped a chick out was when I screwed up with the humidity and it was shrink wrapped completely. It can take a long time for them to bust out of that egg even if they are zipped. It's tiring work hatching I'm sure

The carton method means that yes they are sitting upright just like they were in the turner.

people still use dial up? we don't even have a home phone anymore. just cells.

I know it we don't have a home phone either. I know quite a few BYC'er have a slower connection either dial up or hughes net or similar. My mother's house has dial up, I'd rather push toothpicks under my nails than deal with her connection for very long. I end up tethering my droid to my laptop and dealing with non 3G connectivity than that! lol

Anyone remember when AOL was the cool thing and 56k modems were fast?

I remember when the Timex Sinclair 1000 was released--I think we still have it somewhere in the garage. That was before Al Gore "invented the internet," lol. I also remember how cool I thought Usenet was. I think I'm dating myself...

few people ive seen on here with silkies, showing expensive birds, and i had no idea they went for so much! really kicking myself for not getting the pullet for five bucks last month in time from flea market (was worried about fluffiness in my backpack in heat as i was wanting to browse more as was found at very end were i and he just came in, and he only just noticed he had packed one pullet by mistake with the cockrels)...

laughing dog: what people sell their eggs for and their stock for really varies a lot of quality as well as the particular seller/region you're in. I've seen a dozen eggs anywhere in between $20 (with $15 or so in shipping) all the way up to $100++. Chicks/Adults seemed to be priced according to age as well as quality. 6 week old chicks I've seen for $5 I've also seen for $15-$25 or more. Young adults I've seen anywhere from $20 a piece to hundreds a piece. Sorry I couldn't be more specific but the real answer is the all famous: It's just depends!

Poultrycrazy: Porcelains are still a project color in silkies. Many people may not agree about what porcelain represents in silkies but from my research and all my annoying questions I think I've got the most widely accepted correct idea. I posted few weeks ago in response to someone if you want to read back. If not PM I can give you that part of my notes

Colie, I've seen silkie eggs go for $350 a dozen. That was an auction just in the past couple of months. All depends on how bad people want eggs from a certain breeder when they go by way of auction.

Something for people to keep in mind, the price you pay doesn't neccessarily indicate your hatch rate. I was super lucky to have such a great hatch my first time last week. So far tonight I have 3 chicks out and they weren't due until tomorrow. I used the egg cartons in just 1 of the incubators. 1 chick has hatched from that one and is doing great. It's a sizzle.

Loved your comments on your mom's slow connection. And your chickens are adorable, loved your pics.

Oh don't I know it too! I've seen those auctions wow! Hence the saying $100++ lol I've paid round abouts $300 but ended up with 4 dozen eggs. My hatchrate was horrible...talk about a waste! lol Oh and thanks I'm going to try and take some more pics coming up soon to share. Lots of fuzzies running around here
