Silkie thread!

Here's my baby, MOE! I love her to pieces and she is my only silkie. Just wondering if anyone could tell me some of the DQs for a white silkie, And is she bearded?

EACH state has different requirements for showing so you need to go online and look around for your NPIP links. Here in Texas we have a sister program that is the same as NPIP and is done free. Maybe someone there will speak up to what is required for you. It boils down to Polurum Typhoid testing of your flock. Nearly ALL shows require this testing to show.

California has the free small flock testing also.

Here are the NPIP contacts for each state.

All I found online for Maine was that first they do 30 birds out of your flock, if you have less than 30 then they do 100% of your birds. That lasts a year. Next year they are retested but after that they do 10% of your birds every year.

Here in NY its free. I've been in the program 2 years and both times they did 30 birds.

Not free in Ohio my country home, it is 30 or 40 dollars but I can show my card and show anywhere.
But usually there is someone from the state at a show testing, but it is only good for 30 days?
I think we all resent the State coming in and stressing our flocks.
I asked this Spring the tester from the State how many infected birds did she test in chickens in the last 5 years, her answer was none, only once with ducks.

When it comes to silkies, there are a lot of confused birds out there. Most males would rather talk about the fashion of the other silkies than get down to business. I've actually heard them talking one day, it went something like this.

Roo to the broodies laying in the nest box, "Giiiirrrlll, did you see her crest this morning! OMG, there is NNNNOOOO way I would step out of the coop wearing that! PLEASE!!!! What the HELLO! Lavender undercolor with that shade. And can we say, bare middle toe, in this weather! She should have stayed in the brooder, that's all I have to say!.....Oh huns you have got to get over here and try some of this new grit, it is out the door.....

I had to walk out after hearing this.....

Thanks for the tip. I'll definately be making some calls or sending some e-mails soon. And those are such cute babies! I have 13 right now. They're 2 weeks old and starting to get quite the personalities. They're still so skittish though

Two of them have really cool "afros." My boyfriend ended up naming one of them Presley
