This is my black silkie girl at a young age (don't know exactly how old) and then a little older. Hope this helps.https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/62617_cimg3296.jpghttps://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/62617_cimg3392.jpg

Can anyone say "less stupid laws?" What is the purpose of having to buy 12 chicks instead of three or six or 11? Let me guess the towns around there let you have 3 chickens max, right? Grrr... Can't we just apply safety, cruelty, and nuisance laws already on the books and be done with it....ie If it isn't unsafe, cruel or really annoying to more than two neighbors three out of four days...get the hell out of my property? (sorry had to vent)

It's to prevent impulse purchase. Many of the eastern states have minimum numbers of chicks you can purchase from a commercial seller. I do agree that it is a dumb law, though.

IMHO that is a silkie not a mix. It does appear to be non bearded though. It's also in the "ugly" stage from the looks of it.

X2, except that that is a cute stage! not ugly

There is nothing about the bird to indicate a mix. It has all the required defining features of a silkie. I'm wondering if the photo that includes the frizzled cochin is what got people saying it is a mix?

I saw it too and thought the same thing. It just seemed to have so many hard feathers.

Maybe she could repost that pic of it where everyone thought the same thing.

I have had those before and covered them with a thin layer of unscrented candle wax hatched just fine.

I had a dent/crack in one of my Marans eggs. These were eggs I had waited for, for a long time. I put a piece of clear Scotch tape over it, and figured I'd watch it closely. Surprise, surprise...it hatched!

How do silkie genetics work? With the silkie feathers? Is it dominant or recessive? why does it sometime come out when you breed birds that aren't at all silkies?

Sorry about all the questions. I just added silkies to me my "collection" of birds and I am always inquisitive.
