Silkie thread!

Our chick's feet are so darn feathered it takes me a few minutes just to find a toe to trim their nails!

Also, update on mystery illness- might be fowl pox. Found some scabs on his legs. Going to vaccinate the other chick just in case. Otherwise he's eating ok and still perky, so we're hopeful. Trying to spend more time with him so he doesn't get depressed from being kept away from his buddy.

Haha, I took it off this morning as it didn't seem to make any difference.

Here he is, hiding under the sink and feeling very sorry for himself!

I'm thinking about putting it back on him though as I saw him scratch his eye again with his feet. I know it itches buddy, but you gotta lay off if you want it to get better! Can you use cortizone around the eye?

They make an ophthalmic ointment with hydrocortizone in it, but my vet always advised against using it as hydrocortizone impedes healing and will just make recovery time longer. I had (still have) a horse that tore his eyelid halfway off, and he actually started scratching it with his back hoof after I started keeping him tied in such a way that he couldn't rub his head to scratch. I had that eye stitched up 3 different times because he kept ripping the stitches!

Long story short, I did use the hydrocortizone on him when he was just driving himself crazy trying to scratch, but I used it very sparingly. Does that help answer your question? Not sure if you can get the ointment from TSC or if you have to get it from a vet though.... Good luck!

Ok all you silkie lovers! I need a little help. I want/need to order some leg bands for my silkies so I can keep track of who is who and from what bloodlines, etc. I would like to get the ones that are numbered. Has anyone used these? All my silkies are 1-2 months old. Do I need to buy a set for now and a set for when they are adults? I have a friend who is going to share the order with me, and she has adults & juvies she wants to band. What sizes do we need? Thanks in advance for your input!!

Do you breed and if so what colors?

I,too, just got my first nice silkies. They just hatched so I will probably breed them next fall. I have bbs and whites from Mary Robbins.

Mary says that you may hatch out partridge from her BBS eggs. Did you? I got one partridge out of the eleven chicks I hatched.
