Silkie thread!

The goal at the moment is to get good Silkie type. No decisions have been made on markings since no one at this point has a handle on how the paint gene works. There are still more questions than answers in that regard.

Blacks are being used and some whites to improve type, Silkie characteristics. Europe lost type when they kept breeding paint to paint.

Incorrect on needing pure black and pure white. The white has to be dom white. Silkies are recessive white. That is changing as more paints get out there but that might raise a different challenge as dom white has off coloring in the hackles in the males and some females. So any time a white from paints is sold it needs to be disclosed to the purchaser or they might end up with colors popping up they didn't expect.

Thanks Robin, So now I need to ask what colors would be popping up in the hackles of the dom white? So you are saying they need t disclose to the purchaser that they are dom white?

I have some whites that threw some with a very light greyish tint or lav tint if you will. I was told those were recessive white, was that incorrect do you think and they are dom white? I also have some whites that have a slight tinge of yellow but that could be because I feed mixed grains with the corn right ?

I may be incorrect on this, but I think the majority of white Silkies in the US are recessive white. I would guess that you would have to breed and keep records to determine if you actually had a dominant white. Again, I could be incorrect!

I also think the whites that threw the greyish tint would be considered silver-gene whites.

Its a hard color to describe, its a creamy color. What you're describing is a silver gene white. That's a good thing to have since it will help brighten your whites.

You would be correct. Recessive is the predominate white for Silkies in the US. Where that could change are the solids hatching from paint breedings. Every color under the sun is cropping up with a paint/solid color breeding. White/black/blue/partridge are some of the colors hatching. From reports they are all capable of producing paints.
