Oh yes, she is in the sun and there is a rooster in with her. It was as hot as 118 this summer.

No, she is still in with everyone. None of the others have feather loss, all are fully feathered and healthy. I couldn't find anything about Demodectic Mange in Poultry, only dogs.

No, she is top hen, no one picks on her.

Many of my birds look like that before they start re-growing new feathers, There are a very few who never get that bad, but many that do. Makes it darned difficult to plan on what to show when the show is 2 or 3 months away. Will they have finished regrowing feathers? Or not?

Up her protein level and add oily seeds to her diet: black oil sunflower, safflower, flax. You can also mix canola oil and cod liver oil into her feed. Get a pumpkin now while they are cheap and break it open for her (and the rest of the flock) to munch on, seeds and all (pumpkin seeds are very high protein).

Pam, the yellow with black stripes looks just like a baby I hatched this year (not from my stock). It looks like this now:

I believe he's considered a Grey with red leakage or a "Calico"/"Tortoiseshell". It'll be fun to see what your babies grow into

And I have a couple general questions..I'm pretty sure I know the answers to these but I just want to be 100% sure. If you breed a silkied bird to another silkied bird the offspring will be silkied, right? But if you breed a silkied bird to a hard feathered bird, the chicks will be hard feathered? And if you breed those hard feathered chicks from the silkied/hard feather breeding back to a silkied bird..you'll get silkied chicks?

Pam, thank you for posting this information. BF and I just got a pair of silkies and the rooster looks just like the one you posted.

I did a project a few years ago and it was a silkie roo with an EE hen. The chicks turned out all with black skin the feathers where some silkied and some smooth but all where so soft to the touch it was like touching air. Right now cattatude has them and is continuing the project. She has pics up of them. They are really pretty
