I don't think it's weird. Actually my orpington rooster was making the nest up and trying to coax the pullets and hens in them. Then when they finally caught on and laid and egg, HE was the first one baucking the egg song for them too!!!

Nothing odd there, my big boy Clyde, Black Copper Marans, tells the girls which nest box to lay in. If they dare to go into a different one, he stands there talking to them until they get out and go into the designated box! And yes, Clyde is the first to sing the "egg song". He is sooo loud, he gets the whole darn flock "singing"!
