First of all, CONGRATS! He is a cutie! Yes, silkies will crow at 4 months old. They do like to crow. Mine crow off and on, some more than others, some start much younger than others. The feathers will open up in time. No need to worry. I find that a flea comb helps open up those feathers.

Doesn't mean he needs a bath. If you decide to bathe him, I use Adams flea and tick shampoo. I do put a little bit of blue Dawn in the water that I wet the silkie down with before shampooing. Yes, you can blow dry him...some of mine love it...some not so much.

Thank you all for the advice! His crest is a mass of those waxy tubes, and it looks like he might really fill out once they come off. I'd never have guessed a flea and tick shampoo- but that is a great idea! I think I will leave him be for now. The picture I posted- he was a bit droopy from his trip and today he's much perkier and is holding his tail up and looking much happier. He LOVES to crow! He's in my garage right now under a heat lamp while we wait to introduce him to everyone else. I think he crowed off and on all last night and I hear him crowing now. It's not too loud- sort of a strangled crow. He immediately just goes right to sleep when I pick him up and pet him and he relaxes and seems really happy so far. He is clicking his beak at times-- is that a boy thing?? When he wakes up and looks around (while I'm holding him) he makes a clicking noise with his beak? I don't know how else to describe it?? It seems like such a stupid question, but none of my other birds do that.

He shouldn't need a heat lamp at four months, especially in a garage.

As far as the clicking noise, I have had some that did that. Usually, it was because they were due for a beak trimming.

I knwo it sounds dumb, because my other birds do make a 'happy click' with their beaks, but this just seemed like it was something else. Ah well... I'm probably obsessing. I'm just worried about him being healthy and looking for things.

I use dog nail clippers and take a bit off the tip. Just go slowly because you don't want to get the quick (just like with a nail). After I take a bit off, I file it also.
