Silkie thread!

I'll warn you now, chances are very high this will happen with that hen again. Might even be over night tonight. Get a comb out and give her underside a good combing, it will help but might not prevent it completely.

Robin, why did this happen? Just because she is tangled up under there? I will go comb her out now. The chick was a showgirl chick and it lack the fluff on the neck.

I had something simpler happen to me 2 months ago, but the hen was kicking the chick i was freaking out badly.

Glad your chick is okay!

I am so sorry Christie! I totally understand how you feel and yes the mom was kicking but I finally managed to get her in a position I could hold her leg still and free up the chick.

Its the structure of the Silkie feathers and if there is any trash in the feathers or matted feathers it has a higher occurrence rate.

She is going to have a fit at the comb out. Have scissors for any trimming that might be needed. Obviously I've lost some from this happening and its always to the most devoted Mommies.

I had to get my older brother to get the chick out as the hen only lets me touch her.

Great job on the hair cut! I need to do something just like this for my cockerel-- his crest is so big and so full, I can't see his eyes at all-- even when I lift him eye level with me. Did you use little scissors?? How did you do it? It looks like you did a very nice job. I don't want to ruin his nice big crest, or make it look obvious that I did some cutting.

Here are photos of my 14 week old silkie who is living indoors. I posted photos at 9 weeks and people thought maybe is was a roo. However it is not crowing or anything. Any guesses now? I greatly appreciate any help as we are trying to decide whether to try to assimilate it with the other chickens (in the past it didn't go well -- the mother rejected it, etc. -- the saga is on my blog...)

definitely a boy there at 14 weeks, that ridgey comb and the waddles are a give away. You probably won't hear him crow for a good month or two more, some silkies are known to wait til nearly a year before they crow.

I read through your blog, and if you are super attached to this guy (which raising him indoors, you probably are) then I would honestly suggest looking into buying a chicken diaper online, probably 2 (one for now and one for when he finishes maturing) and let him be an indoor chicken pet, you can build him a mini dog house/coop in a corner of the house, and make a 2 ft little fence area of a few square feet to keep him contained - much like people who keep house rabbits do. Then of course you can let him out to roam when you can supervise him in the house or in a room, or outside. Indoors neighbors are very unlikely to hear a silkie crow, and if they do you can swear its a CD you play for your hens - say you read it helps their instincts to think they have a rooster around or something. LOL
