X2 you shouldnt sugar coat it when someone's asks for an opinon.. That does them no good!! Just to save feelings.. Yea it hurts to her a bird you may or may not be perfict when you thought it was.. But that's life. You get over it and try again. Or keep the bird as a pet.. Or show us differently. But to save ones feelings hurts more in the long run.

Thanks! Good to know. I guess I'm looking for another splash pullet, then. I guess she goes to my layer coop. Sigh.
oh- another question-- this red, it can show up in the offspring from supposedly good breeding pairs?
Red is a disqualification on splash. On a male you would see it coming in on male colour areas (shoulders, hackle, saddle) and on females the breast and possibly hackle. It can be difficult to breed out.

It shouldn't, but could. You might want to switch the pair and see if paired with different birds the leakage is still coming through or not. If it is, you have identified a bird causing it.
I ended up with a splash that looks like it has red goggles. ewwwwwwww! It is going on CL as a pet. It's from some of the eggs I bought in the spring. Happens to be my only splash left, all the others were bought as pets. I was going to post a pic but haven't wanted to take a picture. Like I said.... ewwwwww

oh great idea! Looks like I'll just be doing Black and Blue, until I can bring in a better splash to work with. Which is fine! This is our 4-H project, so we're already having a lot of fun and we don't need to go crazy with this our first year!

Oh of course! It's a club for kids that gets them involved in working with projects that really enrich their life later on. They can participate in many different areas-- like Aerospace/rocketery, Photography, citizenship skills, textiles--like sewing and quilting, Fashion, Cooking/baking, and the list goes on and on! Among those projects are animals like Poultry (any breed--just breed for standard), Swine (pigs), Meat Goats, Milking goats, horsemanship and on and on... Anyway, I signed my son up for this club and we enrolled in a few projects. The club gives you a book that tells you how to go about your project and you keep records, pictures, reports, etc.. But when we go to club meetings, the kids have a great time and it's the parents sitting in the back talking about their "child's" breeding program that the PARENT is working so hard on. Just had to laugh, because it seems like we stress over all the back end of it and the kids get to do the fun stuff.

I am thankful for this thread as I am learning even more here.I don't post alot but I do read here almost everyday.
I agree ,it has taken me almost two years to build my flock with the best silkies I could find.I bought from breeders that show silkies and I am still learning all I can about breeding and showing .I have been very lucky to find a breeder in my area that has helped me along.I have culled as they have grown and now I have a select few that I will be breeding this spring.I only hatched out a few this year just to practice with my incubator and now I feel that I can start hatching to be able to be able to build the best flock that I can.It has taken a long time .I still have lots to learn though. It's really amazing to me to walk out to my silkie pen and see birds that were bred to the standard and yes it does feel me with pride to be able to own and breed them.My whites will be with white,blacks with black.Splash will be with a blue.
Project birds will be with the same.
I hope it's an art that I can perfect
