Silkie thread!

I have a question for you silkie experts! I already own a white silkie hen, around 8 months old I think, and want to get a few more and possibly a silkie rooster. How do I introduce them, is it the same as how people do other chickens, using a cage inside the run with the new silkies in it? If so, what do I do about night time since there isnt enough room in the coop to put a cage?

Thanks for any help! I am supposed to pic up my new girls tomorrow!

Silkies are worse than cats!!! Sit down for a "wee" snuggle in the afternoon. Two hours later it occurs to me that there are probably other things I should be attending to.

I think she is a very Beautiful Black girl

The only thing that I feel may be lacking is her wings. What I mean by that is they seem in the picture to not be nice and tight. But, that could be b/c you took her out of her enviroment and she was uneasy. When you spread her wings open are they nice and full? What's her shredding look like?

Honestly I would say bring her to a few shows and see how she does. I think in my opinion she is a potential SQ Bird

Thank you for all the great tips on getting a better photo. I didn't quite get the diffused light you all were talking about-- I really wanted to try to get a photo now rather than later. I would love if it Sonoran and anyone else would critique my pullet. She is 7 months old. (i think.. she could be a bit younger) Anyway, is she a black or a very dark blue? Also-- the foot picture, that isn't the greatest pic. I was trying to hold her with one hand and take a pic with the other. Anyway, this is Zelda.

Sager...I also think your silkies are nice...esp. your roo...but that doesn't help just saying that does it! I have no experience so sorry. but I think that look great...

Backs look a bit long, but that could be age. He has a REALLY nice comb! And she is adorable--looks to have TONS of personality. I edited out some of your photos to be a bit more concise. You're definitely off to a good start.

Beth--Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll try to get a picture of her wings fanned out tomorrow. I never noticed that! Thanks for pointing that out! Now I'm very curious as to what her wings will look like! If nothing else, she'll be great for our 4-H shows this spring/summer! I want to try a show with her myself, too. And of course, we're hoping for some cute babies.


Sonoran, thanks for the critique as well. I was just looking at the amount of feathering and had not paid attention to how hard the feathers were. I sure hope it'll be okay!

I agree that your roo's comb is very nice! It's got that deep mulberry color, and isn't all crazy looking like some of them get. *cough* (like my hatchery silkies-- poor dears!!) LOL

Some time I'm going to have to post a picture of them-- they are cute in their own way-- they are fiesty and spunky. I love them!

Hi Silkie Lovers, I am mostly a lurker but a budding Silkie-aholic First bought hatchery chicks in November, then bought same age paint chicks in December, now it's January and I've just placed an order for about 14-15 hopefully show quality Lavender, Porcelain, Splash & Blue babies that my 4 yr old and I can start showing (they arrive next week).... guess thats a good example of chicken math??
I took some fun photos a few days ago... thought ya'll might enjoy They all free range when I'm at home during the day, and I gotta say I LOVE watching them interact with each other, it is very soothing!!
