Got a new to Silkies type of question here. Do Silkie pullets typically try to bury their eggs in the bedding?? Could this be an indication that they are trying to hide them from me so they can brood?? Out of 8 pullets, I am getting between 5-8 eggs daily, they are putting my Marans ladies to shame! I have NEVER had a broody hen, so I wondered if this is an indicator? Bedding is a mix of shavings and topped with straw. They seem to prefer the straw, and have made 4 nests. No one has been caught sitting on the eggs, and they are very sweet about me robbing the nests. Sometimes, I really have to dig around in the nests, and some of them are under 2" or so of straw. Any thoughts?![]()
I've watched my silkies lay. I have shavings that they lay in. They like to take their wings and scrape all the shavings up around them. It is really cute. They even manage to throw shavings up on top of their backs when they are doing it. They really nestle down in there. But after they are all done, the eggs aren't buried in the chips... just sitting there. Perhaps your hens are doing something similar, but because of the bedding looks differently? But I really like Sonoran's answer!
