Silkie thread!

I have a question of my own...how long do silkie roos take after crowing before they can handle the hens? I've got a little white roo (in my profile pic) who is coming along very nicely and just started crowing. He's about five months, so pretty young, but I'm impatient to start using him instead of my barely breedable older roo!

Seems like PeepBlessed and I have been talking about this for a few weeks now. My cockerel is just now 10 months old. I've been crossing my finger for fertile eggs and haven't got a one from him. He did start trying to breed around 8 months of age, but he just wasn't getting the hang of it. He'd grab them and never get on top-- just stand next to them. Finally he figured out he had to jump on, but he was either sideways or backwards!!!

I'm hoping with some maturity that he's getting it down.

Although I still don't have fertile eggs from him. It could be mine is just not very smart, or a slow starter. I know that PeepBlessed was having similar problems. Except that her cockerel FINALLY figured it out before mine did. At 5 months, I don't think I'd count on your cockerel being able to cover anyone.... BUT maybe you have a much smarter bird than I have!! LOL!

These are the porcelains next to the black pen. This is what most of the silkies do:

Funny thing... the black roo can't turn around to get back with his girls in the morning so he ends up in the porcelain pen. For some reason, the porcelain roo doesn't seem to care.

Cute!! This is what my silkies do-- they just pile up. :) How in the world does your black silkie fly up that high?? I've never seen any of my silkies be able to get onto something like that. The most I've seen them fly is coming out of the coop-- they will get lift off from the ramp and "fly" (crash) off of it.

Yes, mine was ten months before he got it right and I had fertile eggs for two weeks before he ever crowed. On the other hand I had a pet quality cockerel that crowed at 4 months and was trying to breed everything in sight! I think they are all different.

Hi Peep, I think she is a great blue color that is not too dark and not too light. That is sometimes a hard thing to achieve. Over all she is young and will fill in over the next 3 months. I would not let this girl go anywhere until she is at her full potiential cushion wise. Now with all that being said here is what I think of her as of today and keep in mind it may change as I see her in a few months. Her crest appears to be medium in fullness not to small and not too large. I do see pins so it is possible that she may fill in some still. Her back to me is great and not too long either. Her tail does have a bit too much hard feathering for my liking. But, as she fills in more that may get hopefully lost in fluff :) Foot feathering from what I can see appears to be great. I like her wing tuck but, can not tell if she is split winged without you opening her up in pics. Along with I can't see her shredding either so I can't give much advice on that sorry.

Overall bird to me is definitely worth a go at the shows maybe just give her a few months to be at her fullest potential. Hope this helps!!! Best Wishes, Beth
While you guys are in the critiquing mode please take a look at my 6 mth. old girl Smoke (I know really original, huh?). I am currently disabled and can't go to a show so I'm really relying on you guys for help. I think her crest is a bit small and tail and cushion lacking. I love her wings, foot feathering and not pictured are her perfectly spaced toes.

Please don't worry about hurting my feelings!!! Thanks!! I forgot to mention that she is trimmed below her eyes.

Thank you so much, Beth, for the detailed evaluation. I'm sure this will be of great help to others as well!

I will check her wings as it has been a while since I did.

Hey Roberta,

I'm sorry but, I'm not. I didn't get an answer as to who was judging and since the Little Rhody show is that weekend and a bunch of my other friends locally are going there I opted to go too.

So sorry maybe next year I will plan it better and if I know who will be judging I will make a decision. I plan on doing a show in CT in April, One show in May in Middleboro, MA, Little Rhody show in Richmond, RI, and Boston Poultry Show, North Oxford MA in June. After that it's a wait and see whats up and coming.

Hey Beth, are you still planning on going to Sussex?
