Silkie thread!

I know I have them all shut up in the coop all day today, I feel bad but I'm afraid they will go out start getting wet and not go back in. Even the two little bantys have to be shut up with them so they're not stuck out in the rain. I'm sure they're not very happy. I might have to wait till tomorrow to try the solar lights, it just won't stop raining. Do you let yours go out in the rain?

No, I'm too "chicken".

I'm afraid they'll get sick.

Sonoran, or Beth-- who ever is here and shows- Our show is this Saturday. So I helped my son wash our cockerel first. He's a Splash. We got him pretty clean-- EXCEPT right around his beak on his beard and right on his crest above the comb. I got the crest pretty clean except for the spot it meets the comb. And the spot where it meets the underside of his beak. They still are off colored and dingy looking. He is looking really great except for those areas. What can I do to brighten those or get them whiter/cleaner or whatever. I was tempted to dab at it with vinegar. I hate to do another whole body wash just for those two areas. Any tips to get them to look grey and less dingy? Help! He's hanging out in my kitchen right now. I'd like to do it NOW while he's still in here and drying to cut down on the stress. Lay it on me!!

ETA: OH and I knew the underside beard was dingy, so I used Dawn on him there and really scrubbed/bubbled it up thinking that would help. I didn't realize the little dirt pocket right between his crest and comb was there until we were blowing him out and I spotted it then. I brushed him out lightly and none of it comes out.

no one has a cleaning tip?? :(

Here is our work of the day

(Below) And here he is about half way blown out-- his under fluff was still wet and stuck to his body, so he only looks about half fluffed and looks like he has zero cushion! LOL Poor thing-- but it's a funny pic of him:

I need some advice.

I fixed up a dog kennel for my 4 Silkies... bought them a nice coop, kennel cover, and recently added 6'' of sand. But I have 1 very much PQ male silkie, and he's lonely! I let him free range with the other bantams, but he prefers to stand outside of the Silkies' pen. I've been wanting to buy him a cheap little girlfriend for company and pen them up in an extra pen I have. However, I haven't found one, so now I'm considering giving him 1 of the 3 girls in my Silkie pen. Would she miss her old buddies? Silly, I know... but I'm also worried because this pen hasn't had all the extra work, including the cover over the top to help keep them dry (though the coop is nice and big). Cloud, my PQ male, doesn't have a large crest, and he's smart enough to get out the rain, do you think Kyla, the girl I would give him, would follow his lead? She also has the smallest chest of all my girls, which is one reason I pick her.

Oh! he is going to look awesome! I don't have any bathing experience but if it was me I would use a wash rag that is ver wet and a little baby shampoo and alternate with some scrubs and rinses and see what happens. The dingy stuff would like need another bathing I think so you could use purple dog/horse shampoo. It's used for white and turns any yellow ding color pale silver. I hope you get some response from someone who knows!

OKay-- so like blueing shampoo?? I'm pretty sure I saw that at my farm store! I'll have to go pick it up tomorrow and try it out on his beard. In the picture you can't tell-- but it's the little bit of fluff under his beak that is always getting dipped in the water and feed. It's just dingy colored.

NO!!! Way too much risk of dying him purple or blue. Trust me, you do NOT want that. If you are ever tempted to try this, do it on a bird that is NOT heading to a show anytime before its next molt.

White vinegar and/or stain remover such as Resolve or Shout, or a laundry detergent with non-chloride bleach and a tooth brush will help the dingy areas. Apply a little of which ever product you prefer, brush in with the toothbrush, let it set for a good while, then wash out with warm water. Repeat as needed.

I'd have replied earlier, but I was out running errands, and having my car's battery die on me

Is there a reason you don't put him in with all of them? You aren't hatching the eggs are you?
