Silkie thread!

for splay leg i use the tiny bands or the tiny thin zipties and a piece of string. check every day that the haven't gotten it tighten or that they haven't grown too much, leave for 3-5 days and usually splay leg has been fixed.

However this certain case it sounds more like the chick is weak, not that its splay leg...what bedding/floor do you have it on?

We have them on aspen bedding that is covering paper towels. He was not all wobbles at first, when he sits or walks his legs are moving nearly spread out, but not slipping. So, while thats a good suggestion and probably what makes it happen the most, what other reason could be causing it? Does it just sometimes happen, no matter what? Should I use something else?

Should I add a thicker layer of the shavings? He was sick along with the one that passed, but always kept up eating and drinking. He is also seprated from the rest of the chicks by a screen, so he can still see them and be in the same place without them bumping him over.

Thanks so much for your help and ideas. I am going to try them tonight! :)

Oh Oh, I was wondering if that may be what my little one has. It's right wing is tipped up and out. So, thinking it may be young enough to take care of now? I do have that type of wrap. Smaller than that even. So, will give this a try. Not sure I saw how long you keep it on?
Ok, went back and found it..7 to 10 days for a duck. Thinking a week for this little one.

Baby silkie wings go thru some pretty wild stages. How old is the chick in question?

Thanks everyone!! The chick is doing great. I noticed that the toe on the far outside (mostly covered in feathers) is missing a toenail!!! It's like the toe is a bit short. That's how it caught my eye-- it looked a bit shorter than it should. That is disappointing. What causes this?? Genetic or an incubation thing?? Are they no good for breeding later on??
My understanding is that you may get a couple of points deduction in a show for a missing toenail. I'm not sure what the common thought is on cause but I have had several chicks from several breeders who have one or two missing.

1 little one didnt make it. I did everything I could. RIP little chickie!!!

Now for the other one that is not feeling well. I think Ive got his pasty butt issues controlled, but he is looking like he is starting to get splay leg.

Any tips on how to nip this in the bud? Its making him wobbly. But he still drinks and eats. Would really like to save this one!!!
I use vet wrap to fix splay leg because its easy to come off and doesn't rip the chicks feathers off its legs. Here is the link to how to fix it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-fix-spraddle-leg

I just wanted to share some pictures of my latest hatch. I hope all of you Silkie lovers don't mind. I love to share!

What color is that little guy?
I can't wait for my chicks to hatch. Going on day 5 now. Time just doesn't go by fast enough when you want it to. When you don't want it to go fast, it flies by.
