Silkie thread!

Life without silkies would be a lot less smiles.

For me, I like the looks of some of the light ones. I actually started not to buy my girl because she looked really dark in her "baby pictures," lol. But she's ended up being my absolute favorite!

When I got her

And one of my favorites of her..

I think she is gorgeous!

Here is my roo and I consider him a loud splash (and a loud mouth, but boy oh boy I love him!!)

I htink it is both. Too many people breeding and selling chicks or eggs when they really don't know the standard. I don't have a problem with people who aren't into exhibiting, just want to breed. But they should know the standard, and how their birds measure up quality wise. They need to be breeding to improve the breed, not to make a quick dollar.
YES!! Exactly!! I just want to breed some quality birds that we can show and try to stick and closely to the SOP as we can. I hope the breeder's I've chosen to buy eggs from are doing their best to do this. I sure don't want all these hidden genes popping up some where later on down the road. Sigh.

EVERYTHING is up to each judge. I've seen things DQed that shouldn't be, and things that were not DQed that should. Generally when exhibitors are upset with a judge at a show, it isn't just about one breed, it is about a number of breeds or classes.

You can protest, but it has t be done pretty rapidly, and you have to put up money (returned if found in your favour). It is rare to see it happen.

I think judges are getting pickier about wings. Before the APA National in Shawnee in December 2010 (self-blue qualifying meet) I had never seen wings marked down on cards before--but dang if it wasn't marked on a HUGE number of cards there. And looking at the wings, there were a fair number with problems. Probably not as many as were marked, though.

At the Silkie National in 2005(?) in L.A., every single buff was DQed for having black in wings and/or tail. Mind you these were all mostly clear birds. None had more than a little bit of black.
VERY interesting! That sounds a little harsh on the Buffs-- isn't it super hard to be absolutely clean as it is with them??

I love my Brinsea as well! I barely ever have any trouble with the humidity and I never have trouble with the temperature. Its also a great beginner incubator! I've only had four hatches in it but all have gone pretty well. The first and second time I hatched in it the humidity would drop into the 30's during lock down at night but I haven't had that problem with any of my recent hatches.
Yeah, mine holds temps and humidity steady. I can be bone dry and run out of water for 3 days and it will still stay right around 45%. I just add water when it starts dropping below that.

Only if you clerk for the judge. Otherwise, you must stay out of the aisle during judging. Lots of exhibitors watch fro the next row over, sometimes the judge ignores them and once in awhile they will talk really loudly as they explain what they are seeing to their clerk.

This is what I find so wonderful about the 4-H. Since this is a teaching experience, most of the judges do clear the aisle, but allow the 4-H'er in to listen to how his bird is being judged and they are allowed to ask questions during judging (well, once he's done). Otherwise, we can all stand on the next row and usually hear what he's telling his clerk and it was so nice, because even though we were an aisle over, he would speak up and hold the bird out and point out faults or good points.

This is just so much fun!!
