Silkie thread!

INTRODUCING CUPCAKE the new addtion to the pastries (2months oldish) not sure of her color they said blue perhaps but i'm confused by what the term BLUE means lol ... wha t i do know is i love her markings... these pictures dont do her (hopefully her) lol justice... shes super sweet the entire time i was taking pictures of her she was singing ... :D she is the most vocal out of my silkie bunch. sorry she's a little dirty she decided to take a dirt bath this morning.
What a cutie!!! She is a Blue. Basically that means "not a Black" LOL!! She has gold leakage on her wings and back. A Blue can be a light grey to dark in color-- almost Black. Hope SHE is a girl!! Stoopid-- awwww, that is an adorable little rooster you have there dressed in his santa outfit! hehe!! Looks like he does really well wearing it. Originally Posted by chisNchickens

Lol thanks for the clairification... Now just got to figure out to explain that to my 3yr old who's like but mama cupcakes not blue :D

Is your ramp wide enough? And it may be too steep for them to use. You could set a cement block under it to raise the bottom end so it's not so steep? And they do like to huddle on the ground anyway. Mine don't roost.
After reading this we cut the legs off the hen house and lowered it, now it's only about 4-6 inches off the ground. I may just remove the ramp all together and add some steps. To start with the house was about 18 inches off the ground and the ramp is about 4 feet long with cross bars every 6 - 8 inches and it's 8 inches wide. Should I widen the ramp, or just do away with it and add a step?

I tried treats the other day and they acted like they've never seen them before, my other hens go nuts for them and come running when they hear the container rattle....I have Happy Hen Treats, mealworm. I also feed scraps to the chickens, and the silkies don't seem too interested in them....are most silkies kind of aloof? Mine seem to be....maybe its just the "adjustment period"?

Thanks everyone for your advice and help with these little ones.

When we've gotten new silkies a lot of times they didn't understand treats. We gave them the more colorful and tempting ones at first--like strawberry top cutouts--and after awhile they figured out that they were yummy. Once they get the concept of treats they go for them pretty quickly, but ours have never become as pushy or forward as our other chickens.

Like Sonoron said, a light inside does wonders, and I think you were wise to lower the coop. We've used a camp lantern before. Now I'd just give them a step and I'll bet they start going in much better!

Darling babies! Your roo is beautiful and that close up of your SG...PRICELESS!

(LOVE my SGs!!)
Thought I'd add pictures of my silkies too. The youngsters are in a raccoon proofed large rabbit cage. They don't all have names yet. The first one is a blue pet quality chick, the buff is split to lavender, the showgirl and buddy are potential BQ/SQ. Still not sure if they are black or dark blue; came from a BBS pen (not my breeding.) There is a blue showgirl (BQ/SQ - my avatar), another pet blue and a pet black hiding in the green igloo. Camera shy I guess.

Older silkie, a patridge showgirl 'Vegas' estimated at almost 3 months old. Still not sure if it's a cockerel or pullet. Any guesses?

And last, but not least, 'Zazz' a black rooster with silver leakage in his hackles. I'm aiming for full duckwing silver.

I use steps for my Silkies to get into the coop (it's only about 8 inches high) but as they get older I think they get a kick out of "flying" into the coop. Wings flapping, feathers flying...but they do it over and over again for fun (silly birds).

Mine have never been wild over the Happy Hen treats, but plain yogurt, raisins, grapes, oatmeal, scratch, shredded wheat, hard boiled egg all drive them wild. They all eat their treats out of a big dog bowl and the teeniest ones perch on the side to eat. SO DARLING to watch
