Silkie thread!

Buff is not a gene but a combination of genes (with additional not yet registered genes).
So Buff can be eWh/eWh s+/s+ * s+/- Co/Co Db/Db Mh/Mh Di/Di
I wonder why I thought this was all so complicated!

Now that's a mouthful and a half. lol I don't understand everything, as I still do not understand all the different alleles and all these things. But! I will save this in my files and as I learn more, I will go back and read it again. Someday I'll get it!

Thank you!

Breeding chickens is sexual breeding, meaning 50% comes from the father 50% comes from the mother.
In other words for ALL genes 1 allel comes from the father and 1 allel comes from the mother, together these 2 alleles become again 1 new gene and this for ALL genes concerned genes.
Just an exception for the sex-linked genes, in birds, so also chickens, females have 1 "complete" allel and 1 "shriveled" allel => example s+/- => the "s+" = gold allel (opponent of Silver = S) and "-" = shriveled allel => written as "s+/-"

I got three new babies today. I am new silkie owner, so I only have pet quality silkies for now, but one day soon I will be aiming for SQ/BQ. I need to decided what colors I want concentrate on for that. Right now I just love all the colors.

The first two pictures are of the first two I got from her about a month ago. I call them Butter and Popcorn, because they looked like little popcorn kernels popping everywhere.
This one is named Popcorn:

Your babies are so precious!!

I speak about Silkies from across the pond = EU Silkies.
eb and eWh (as also e+) are called duckwings.
Most Silkies have the groundcolor eb (even the Red and Buff) which show grayish undercolor, they are called Partridge. Red and Buff with colored undecolor have groundcolor eWh (as the Wheaten and Salmon). Also the Columbian can have eb or eWh groundcolor.
Point to keep in mind is birds with groundcolor eb are best for the more black-pigmented colorations, these with groundcolor eWh are best for the red-pigmented colorations.
E and ER are called crowwings.
Most Black, Blue, Splash, lavender and Cuckoo have the groundcolor E but can be also ER.
ER should have lacings on the chest. It's very difficult distinguishable in Silkies if your bird have E or ER groundcolor.
Ml is known for producing green shine as Mh is known for producing violet shine.

crossing the pond should not be an insurmountable problem anymore

Thanks for the info. I'm still reading Sigrid van Dort's book on basic colours; I'd like to get her silkie book some day.

As for across the pond - sharing knowledge isn't the problem...it's getting the chickens across
