It's way early to judge a chick except for feet. I always like to see a nice wing, but wings get better or they get worse. The wing looks good from this view. Is there good feathering on the front long toe (middle toe). It's hard to tell in a photo. Toe spacing looks pretty good. Too young for me to sex.I took some new pictures today.
Would you guys give me your opinions on these little chicks? They're about a month and two weeks. All positive and negative comments welcome.
Good feathers for 1,5 months?
Blue?
All you beak experts!!
Does this one look like a hen or a rooster? Or is it too early to tell at 1,5 months?
I'm afraid it's a rooster?![]()
I thought this picture was just cute.

I never thought of vaseline, i can give it a try. Im debating a good bath with vineger and seeing how that goes then reapplying dust. If i cant get a handle on this i might have to give up my silkies :'( i really dont want that. Anyone else have advise to add??
Barb ~ The Silkie Blue color ranges about as much as the Marans do. Look at some medium blue hens, and they have a dark feather here and there in the coloring. Some are darker in the neck area, or in the wings on the darker Blues. Splash to me is White with blue feathers intermitently scattered about. Now, if the Silkes could just get lacing....Question about blue v. splash .... if they are "grey" with dark spots, is this just like a "dirty" blue (bad quality? - one copy of the Bl gene) as opposed to white with dark bits which I assume is true splash and carrying two copies of the Bl gene?
What, exactly, is a "Blue Silkie" supposed to look like?
Hmmm, I don't think that one would work on a Silkie. You may end up with a bald Silkie! This advice is slightly off topic, but when one of my girls came home with head lice a fews years ago, I used a peice of tape to catch the bugs. It might help.

Just to be clear -- do we assume true "splash" (2 copies of the Bl gene) only if they appear white with speckles???? (Which is what I would assume with Marans or Ameraucanas. Those silkied feathers are an even BIGGER puzzle!)![]()
Yes, although in Marans it will be crisper due to the hard feathers. In the Silkies, it will be somewhat blurred looking due to the barbless feathers. Here is a Marans Splash, and below a Silkie Splash, (albeit somewhat dirty). I would consider both to be true Splashes, now if I'm wrong, Sonoran will come in here to whip me straight!Just to be clear -- do we assume true "splash" (2 copies of the Bl gene) only if they appear white with speckles???? If a Splash is technically white and blue... then I don't think anything I have at all fits into that. I think my splash are a very light blue/grey with darker spots. I missed out on the earlier conversation about this. What's the deal? Are you trying to define a blue splash and a splash (caught that term earlier)... or are they all splash? If so, then is one a DQ or of poor quality than the other? I need this broken down to understand what the line of thinking was and where it is leading.Yes, although in Marans it will be crisper due to the hard feathers.
