Silkie thread!

I'm a brand newbie, and would find this info helpful also. I bought ebay silkie eggs from someone that is also on here, who I believe has several colors in his pen (although he refuses to answer that or any questions now--wish I had known to ask ahead). Not, understanding what the + sign means, what colors would be the best to keep to get the most out of 2 small pens. Can I keep whites and be OK? Would anyone mind explaining the chart as to what the + sign means? TIA
Sorry, Tina, for butting in on your post.....from another Tina

I also have a terrible time understanding these things and I've been trying a long time. This chart will help with the Blue, Black Splash known as BBS

The way the Blue gene works in a breeding can be broken down as follows:
1) Blue x Blue: This will produce 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash.
2) Black x Blue: Produces 50% black and 50% blue.
3) Black x Splash: You'll get 100% blue.
4) Blue x Splash: Produces 50% blue and 50% splash.
5) Splash x Splash: This will give you 100% Splash.
Not listed is black to black. 100% black

White is best bred to white and buff to buff

Thank you all for your patience and your replies. I found this article on the ASBC site which talks about breeding blues in silkies and mentions lacing.

Quote: Two things will help:

1) use the calcium inhibitor filter; they run about $10, and will keep the mist heads clean much longer, and
2) get a spare set of mist nozzles and soak them in CLR. Change them out as needed, and soak the ones that got clogged up. You can keep re-using the same mist nozzles for a really long time.

Our calcium is really high, too, and this makes it possible to keep them working.

Very helpful!

Quote: The plus sign indicates wild-type; the variation present in the red jungle fowl. Not-blue (black) is wildtype. Upper case indicates a dominant allele (variation of a gene), lower case indicates a recessive allele.

Being on a site does not indicate the presence or absence of ethical behavior. I've heard as many horror stories about purchasers as I have about sellers. Likewise for stories of transactions that went splendidly. Usually best to ask questions ahead of time, and to gauge whether or not to finalize a transaction based upon how comfortable you are with the communications.

You can keep your blues, blacks and splash together. Whites need to be by themselves, as do buffs. I have seen a couple of excellent blues out of a blueXbuff pairing, but the majority of the offspring were mixed colours. I wouldn't recommend this if don't understand what you are doing, and are prepared for mostly PQ birds (based upon strange colourings).

Great idea about the the string of mister heads!!

Looks like a boy-- I have 11 week olds too, and the boys are looking like yours and my girls still have no comb growth at all.
Thanks for the reply on gender. Also thanks to Sonoran Silkies. I was afraid by the attitude that she was a he. I guess time is the only way we will know for certain, however, he is going to have to be really tough since my daughter named him "Birdie-Num-Nums"!
