Silkie thread!

I was thinking about adding a couple of other Bantam breeds to my flock. I currently only raise Silkies. What does everyone think of Japanese bantams or bantam polish laced? I've been interested in those breeds, but want to make sure they will get along with my little Silkies. Here is a few pics of them!!

Lovely, lovely!!!

Ohhh, my last little chick that had the goo and bleeding, now just had a large watery light green poop. Not too water, but large for a baby....and so soon after hatch. I'm really worried about it. I gave it a little drop of poly vi sol...just don't know what to do. Its down is stuck to it and crusty......what can I do? Do I need to separate it? I hope someone is on here at this time of night...
Thanks in advance,
TinaLou

I bathe in very warm water that has a couple of drops of shampoo. Stay away from eyes. Towel dry and put back in the incubator or directing under the light in the brooder. Big watery green poop is common in my newly hatched chicks. Probably 1 in 5 poop before they leave my incubator. Chicks some times break the small remaining yolk sack while they are turning to hatch and that is what causes the stickiness. It can lead to a weak chick and some don't make it. I hope your little one makes it. Sounds to me like you are taking very good care of it.

Congrats on your chicks! Don't worry about a little bit of blood. He must have hatched too fast or wasn't quite ready when he came out.

Good luck! :)

Yeah, they usually don't poop too soon after hatching. What do you mean it's down is stuck to it? Can you post a picture? Is this a sticky chick??? Sticky chicks don't usually make it out on their own. And if they do, they often have a lot of problems. If the sticky down is interfering with his movements, you're going to have to wash him. I do this with sticky chicks immediately. I run warm water-- check it several times to be sure it's warm enough-- but not too hot. Then put the chick under and use cotton balls and my fingers to rub off all the stick. Then put them back into the incubator to dry off. Don't air dry them! But I can't tell what problem you are having without a picture. And so my advice could change depending on what I see.

BTW-- did you help this chick out? Chicks that are helped out are often at risk for having the umbelical cord ripped out from their rear and bleeding.
No, I had "the patience of Job" for this hatch--NOT!! But, I didn't so much as open the incubator, except to remove chicks. I think it did come out to soon.... This one was the last one, hours after the others, but eagerly zipped in about 45 minutes. When it pushed all the way out--there was the clearish goo still in the egg. Its umbilical cord detached quickly, but I could see it start to bleed some...maybe, it just looked like a good bit, but I knew if it keep rubbing the screen it would get worse. So, I got some paper towels to lat in the bottom, put the powder on and replaced it inside. The bleeding stopped, but it was very sticky--maybe I smashed its down? It is up and bright today, but I think you are right---may have to bathe it.

Sorry, the pics aren't great--they all kept chasing the camera...

chick 3---this one has some coloring---I will put two pics, maybe someone can tell if it's really white??
Or, partridge....or, buff??

Of course, it on the left and sticky chick on right---it has like a dotted ashy/purple area on its back, not showing well in the pics....hmmm

I know they will be much fluffier in a couple of days....they are still sporting some "dapper Dan"...

I will be doing a bath shortly, I think...thank you. Its little feet are a little pink instead of black, but it's eating and drinking well..... I hope you are right, and that it'll be ok.

Quote: I had one that looked like your sticky chick. I just bathed him in warm water to get the stuff off, dries him in a towel and put it directly back under the brooder light. He is fine. I say he because at 8 weeks HE is trying to crow. Pathetic sounding but definitely a crow. And these are not hatchery chicks, so I was suprised it was trying so early.

And can I say that I got some silkie eggs so I could hatch a "natural incubator". But I have fallen so in love with these cute little fuzzy butts!

How did this happen?
You should see the new run I built for them this last week. It's nicer than my LF run! Just not quite as big. I will post pics soon.

They are gonna be soooo spoiled!

He is a bit sticky, but not as bad as I've had sometimes. He could probably use a good rub down. Use a cotton ball to rub his fluff with the water, it's gentle and will help loosen the gunk. Put him back in the incubator to dry again. Here is a sticky chick I had hatch on the left and then I had a chick that had some kind of rear problem (black) and he ended up dying only a couple hours after this pic. Anyway, this sticky chick below couldn't move his wings and barely move his feet because his fluff was so stuck together and dried out, it was keeping him from moving much.

Did you get porcelain eggs? That last one looks possibly porcelain. The sticky one maybe the same or buff. They are just adorable! Don't they make your heart swell?

This is the best time to check out their toes for any extra toe numbs or nails or lack there of. After they feather in a week or two it becomes harder and harder to see what's what. I makes notes on every chick. :)

Would someone be kind enough to post some pictures of porcelain and lavender chicks so I will know what to look for when mine start to hatch?
How likely are you to get a chick of this color our of an egg? I don't know much about the lavender & porcelain breeding. I have read that paints for example do not breed true, so you might not get one every try? Is it the same with porcelain and lavender?

Oh, when I got my first chicks (RIRs), and then saw a picture of a Silkie, I said "that is just too wierd! I'll never have one of those!"
not%20good.gif
Well....the more I looked and the more I read about them, the more I realized that I HAD to have some!!

And, now I'm planning to downsize my reds and let my black bantam pair go, so my "big pen" can be for the Silkies...yep, spoiled!!

Yeah, I think mine was that bad last night...I'm so sorry about the black chickie--it was so pretty!!

A bath it got!! It even enjoyed some of it...it's drying in the incubator now. Thank you!!

I think the guy had about every color listed!! LOL So, I have no idea...I was hoping to get some whites....yeah, looks like I have two sets of twins....two small vaults and 2 large....waiting for the other to dry to see if it has the same color as the other one. Porcelain would be nice.

They all have five toes...will have a closer inspection later...my eyes are still adjusting from watching the eggs so closely yesterday!!

Their feet are so fuzzy!!
