Silkie thread!

I have a chance to get a trio of white Silkies. The guy said he has shown them in the past--they have a huge flock, but I wanted to see what you all think of the pics he was able to quickly snap yesterday. He said they have not been groomed in a few months. It was very hot yesterday, so I can't tell anything about their wings...I wish he could have gotten me some better pics, but he's not too far away to go look at them in person.

thanks in advance for any help
You mentioned these photos were taken in the heat so that puts them at a real disadvantage to look at their type. They look really beautiful! I would especially check their wings for split wing. They are mature birds and there shouldn't be any gaps in the feathers.

I like this male's tail, looks like the kind that wins in that aspect.
I like him, too!! I wish I could see the ladies better!

I would agree! The male is the one that stands out to me

Yeah, I see something like that..I'm just hoping it is the heat...

I will definitely be checking them!

I have done many, many silkie hatches and never had splayed legs. That does seem really odd. Are you chicks hatching on the day they are supposed to? If not you many have a temperature problem.
According to the incubation books, splayed legs are "almost always caused by a slippery surface in the incubator or brooder that led the chick to injure itself when it tried to stand up. Make the surface less slippery with appropriate bedding." "Less common causes of splayed leg include temperature swings in the incubator, vitamin deficiencies, trouble hatching (such as pipping at the wrong end of the egg), or overcrowding causing chicks to pile on top of each other in the brooder." As quoted from Permaculture Chicken: Incubation Handbook by Anna Hess.

hi im nick and , i know this is kinda off topic, but this is my first time getting silkies and i want to do it right, im buying a incubator and buying some hatching eggs

ok so this is my first time ever getting a incubator, and im getting some silkies for the first time , so im getting some hatching eggs from the garry farm, i have two questions: what quality woud u say the garry farm silkies are, and the second question is, do u think this is a good incubator for a newbie

They look very nice. Of course, the real answer is what you are paying for them, and whether the price is worth it to you.

OH hey, I remember you!! You were wanting silkies last year, I think. I'm glad you are getting an incubator and going to hatch your own! That will be fun! I don't know about the garry farm. Probably someone else knows more about them than I do. If they have a website or other people have pictures of grown birds from their eggs-- I would check into that if I were you. I've only bought eggs from people where I can see the offspring from those eggs. The quality will depend on how good their background and genetics are and how well you incubate them. Even if working with really super birds, you won't always get super chicks. But you should get birds with less faults and are pretty decent if you start with decent parents. I'm assuming these are along the lines of being pretty decent. I don't use a hovabator, but I know a lot of people do. There is a thread here dedicated to them. You could check it out and ask people who use them. I would stick with an incubator that had forced or circulated air, so if that is an option, get it! An egg turner would be really nice, too. I use a Brinsea Octagon, and it's pretty fool proof, but it costs a bit more. But I'd buy another one in a heart beat now that I've been using mine for a while. Just be sure to get a really good hygrometer that can be calibrated and get a good thermometer. Those are almost more important than the incubator itself! Good luck!!! I hope you have fun hatching! Let us know how it goes!

Consider zip tying cage door closed after judging. Keeps random people from opening the doors.
ooh, great advice!

Thank you....this family is getting out of the whites, and they are just asking $100 for the trio. If they are pretty decent w/out DQ's (which I think they are) it will be more than worth it to me. They will be my first adults, as all I have now are 4 chicks with some more hopefully hatching around Friday.
