Silkie thread!

Haha thats too funny...we are going to get d'Anver hatching eggs in a month and hatch them. I'm sure we will have more than we need if your son wants a few. Our city ordinance doesn't say we "can't" have roosters either, but...I'd rather not push the limits.
We should brave Stockton together! We are in Rocklin, and were at Flatlands 4H but are trying to move to Gold Country in Sept.
Yes, he would love to get a few d'Anvers. He saw some hens at the state fair and wants to raise them from chicks. (He's fascinated with miniature things) I guess we could even hatch eggs, but I'm so leary about getting roosters and needing to re-home them. In the last year we've sold or given away a dozen roosters of various breeds!

I read that D'Anvers roosters aren't very loud when they crow, but I don't want to take a chance.

(Shh, only my silkie roos get special consideration)

I keep my silkies in a seperate coop and special enclosed pen away from my egg-layers. I don't want my bossy big girls to hurt my fragile silkies. Do you know if D'Anvers can free range with the LF? My mind is racing now with building them a cute, little coop out of a wood doghouse on stilts....hmmmm?

Let's definately consider carpooling to the Stockton Show this year. Maybe I'll even show Bullet and Mysty Blue. Have you ever shown any of your birds? We haven't even done the fair with 4H, yet. I'm a little scared about biosecurity but Sheri said she's never had a problem with her chickens catching anything (knock on wood).

Oh, here's a picture of the D'Anver Jonathan fell in love with. The owner took her out and let him pet her. She has her wings spread, but she was very pretty and so tiny.

Hope I don't get in trouble for posting a non-silkie on this thread...Keep in touch, 4HChickmama

Lol...pm'ing you so that we don't get on everyones nerves! Lol!

I have a genetics question. I have the following color chicks that I just hatched: blue, black (may be split to lav), porcelain, white, and partridge. As far as breeding goes, if I have a black roo which colors can go in the pen without causing problems with color later? I tried the chicken calculator but it's still a bit confusing to me. It seems that it will be almost all black offspring. My question is will those black offspring later cause color leakage or strange colors to pop up? I have only one coop so I can't separate.

Not may...WILL.  It turns off the expression of all colour and pattern genes present in the bird.  Basically like a can in your pantry that has had the label removed.  NO idea what is inside it.
:yuckyuck

But if you bred a white to a white, you would always get white, right? Oh so many rhyming words.

I have two whites from very complicated colour backgrounds. So I'm curious :)

I think the only cross of colors you list that won't cause you leakage problems is black x blue.

I know this has probably been said, i had a page bookmark but can't find it for the life of me... What woukd you get if you breed a white to a blue or a white to a black?
We just lost our partridge showgirl which i am mad about, we were planning on rehoming our white showgirl roo cause hes a he, but my husband is now pondering the thought of us keeping him...
But was wondering what colors chicks we'd get....
Thanks , and i must say this thread moves fast!
Like everyone else has said... don't breed white to anything but white. If you don't want white, then sell them or put them in another pen. If you have blue and black, both of those will breed true together. But white with other colors just creates colors that no one else is going to want and later on, you can't breed.

Thanks a bunch! Sound advice and I will absolutely follow it and keep you posted (if that's okay) in case anything changes and I need more advice. I appreciate your help. I know there is a forum for sick birds but I have followed this thread for a while now (and love it BTW) and you are all so knowledgeable that I figured better/easier to ask here.

Blue and black together and Splash, if you have it. Breed the others only to like colors-- don't mix them up. Partridge to partridge, etc... like to like. Otherwise, you make colors that no one else wants and are considered mistakes. Makes it harder to rehome them when you need to.
