Silkie thread!

I feel silly even asking this question. Can I have Blue, Black and Splash birds all together in a breeding pen? Is this considered BBS or is it because the birds could throw Blue, black, and splash chicks? How do you know if a specific hen or roo is from BBS?
Yes, BBS means that you have blue, black and splash in the same pen. Depending on which "colors" breed together will determine the offspring. There are charts out there that give you the percentage of which color you'll get. I know it's been posted on here before, but (sorry) don't know the percentages by memory (sorry). Someone will probably link the info or post it. I have BBS silkies, but they aren't old enough to lay eggs yet.

I LOVE the variety of colors by breeding BBS.

For some reason, the genetic chart gives me a brain cramp. LOL
We are looking for a way to maximize our color options and keep only 2 pens. BBS and White. I can understand why you would love them :)

A breeder who shows told me that the judges prefer a dark blue that is almost black. I have some of those (2 months old); but I think the lighter blue is prettier. She shows the lighter blue- and people fuss at her for "not keeping to the standard" In the APA book, it doesn't really specify. Here is a pic of the light blue and the dark blue (scruffy because they are growing big boy feathers). I prefer the lighter.

I have been told the same thing. That the standard is navy to almost black. I too prefer the light blues and have in fact cut all of the dark ones from my breeding. They may not be to standard, but my birds are first and foremost pets. And my I prefers the lighter ones.

Going to get some better pics tonight but what color do The Experts think the three babies are? The breeder said they came from MottledxPartridge and SplashxPartridge parantage. They all look straight mottled to me...

SO cute!!! Love that brahma mama, too!!!! We just got some of those and are finding them to be wonderful birds!

I'm assuming that that chicks you're asking about are the one in the front and the two dark ones in the back?
I have no idea what a motted silkie would looks like. lol Those little ones almost look blue. Hard to tell. Whatever they are, that's a very cool picture.

Wanted to share my hatch from Marenypoo eggs with you all. There were a few others that were still in the incubator drying. Got a variety of BEAUTIFUL colors including lav and cuckoo.

I know what mottled looks like in other breeds, and would assume it would look similar enough as day olds, but these just look blue, I agree.
