Silkie thread!

My eggs are under Lacy and there is no way she is going to stand up and let me take a look. So I guess I just wait and watch for fluffy little chicks running around in the cage

I really wish there was someway to see the pipping as I've never seen an chick hatch.

Do not, under any circumstances, buy an incubator!!!!

You will be hooked and spend the rest of your life with your nose pressed to the little window. I've even been known to take an incubator with me on vacation with an adapter so it can be plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car.

Chicks are magic, put in an egg and get out a chick

Girls have combs too. I am not sure what you mean by bump - but at 5 months, I am usually pretty certain with my own. My boys have definite streamers by then.

I'm going to post a picture as soon as my phone sends it....

No streamers tho at all.

Coming up in a bit.. Thanks!

Question.
And I need an answer, please.

I just bathed my two pullets and one had a bit of a bump on her comb. It is deep mulberry/gray color and not near the size of the cockerels but a bump nonetheless. Everything else about her screams girl. She's about 5 months old.

Do pullets have little bumped out combs too? Or might this be a roo posing as a pullet???

Help please, I am taking her to an adopter today, who is expecting a girl!

Thank you!

OK, pictures.
Her today standing. No streamers and she is very mellow. And a picture of her comb. I guess it's not colored just gray.

Thanks for your help!

Quote: I lost so many hours of sleep watching my first hatch! It is so riveting!

I was thinking I just wanted to use broodies from now on, but I am asking for a bator for Christmas.

You can't predict when a hen will go broody and I might need to hatch when I don't have one, right?

I am in so much trouble.

So if you don't want anything like the above post or to lose sleep....DON'T DO IT!............But I would.

Oh boy, I'm in TROUBLE! Guess what I did yesterday...So I had asked for recommendations on incubators here, got a couple of replies, and started researching prices online. I should know better than to go to Ebay!

I found a brand new HovaBator that came with the fan, turner, digital thermometer/hygrometer, and an egg candler. It should be here next week

I too have researched prices on ebay. Dangerous place!
I am pointing my DH in that direction for one too!

That is a bigger comb than I am used to for girls at this age. Not even my year old hens have a comb that big, but it's not like it couldn't happen. The crest is very girly.

I know. She seems very girlie except maybe that comb. Acts very girlie too. The others from the same hatch had really big combs and have been crowing. She just stands in the back quietly acting girlie...

Ack.

Any other experiences with pullet combs?

I've had three incubators running non-stop (other than for cleaning) for nearly a year now. I have Lakenvelder & Bobwhite quail chicks due this weekend. And silkies, Iowa Blue, Ameraucana & more Lakenvelders "cooking" in the other two.
