Pictures of my new babies who hatched on Monday and Tuesday. 3 white silkies and 2 blue/black slikies..........

I have a question about pullet [or cockerel] combs and waddles. I tried searching BYC but haven't had luck. I have some gorgeous 3 mo old silkies from The Gerry Farm [AH Robbins, Amy Crego, etc lines] and CJ Silkies. They are all gorgeous!

My sweet gray black lav split from CJ has proven to be a boy. I have a great home ready for him though. He started getting little reddish waddles about a month ago and his comb got bigger and lumpy, both were/are a deep mulberry color. He just now started a feeble pathetic little crow.

He's so so cute and sweet though.

My question is with my remaining chicks, all white beardeds.

I have one [one of my favorites] that has developed tiny little waddles, though not mulberry in color. Also, s/he has a raised comb [maybe 1/4"]. It is smooth, symmetrical, and dark gray, no red tones at all [unlike the gray boy above who was mulberry right away] but raised up. It's really hard to get a clear picture of this because she is so fluffy and bearded and the waddles are too small to get with a camera. My description is exact though.
Should I prepare for a boy here too, or could this be normal for a pullet???

I just adore her/him so much.


S/he acts very girlie. Never ever chest butts, moves away from the others when they do, walks with her chest very close to the ground never standing straight and tall, and is a total "lap dog". Very mellow. Runs to hide when anything scares her. Her crest is very round, very round, with no swept back look and no streamers. A sister from the same group is very similar to her in all ways except her gray comb is flat and she has no waddles.

Any guesses on sex???

A quality silkie cockerel does not have a swept back look until his comb gets so large that it some times pushes the crest back. But, I would be suspicious of a comb that size at 3 months.

I don't think so. It should last at least a few days. it doesn't becaome volatile, it just loses it disinfecting properties. Like bleach in water sitting out. How long have you been misting her? If it were me, I would go get the Tylan or some Denegard powder and have it on hand. Mist them 2-3 times per day for the next two days. If she doesn't sound any better I would go ahead and start antibiotics. Just my opinion.

well I was doing too little oxine in water with the nebulizer for the first 3 days, then I got the right dosage but have only been able to do it once a day ( that was since thursday) but she was siting on my couch with it pointed at her face so she may not have gotten enough since she kept moving her head. So now I have them both in the crate (the other one doesn't have it but I figured it wouldn't hurt) with the nebulizer inside rrunning with a sheet over the crate so it fills up the whole crate. I tried misting her a few times but she just buried her head.

Quite frankly, running the oxine solution through a humidifier seems like it would work better. Yes, keep her in an oxygen-tent-like environment so that the oxine mist fills the air she breathes. If you cannot be there to turn it on more than once a day, try putting it on a timer. The only issue is whether the tank will hold enough solution for multiple sessions.

So is the nebulizer okay or do you mean to go and by a humidifier? This nebulizer holds enough for about an hour.

Well, technically a nebulizer can do a better job. BUT it is intended to blow directly into the mouth/nose, and in most cases the solution will not last anywhere near an hour. A humidifier typically lasts many hours, and is intended to condition (add moisture to) the air surrounding the patient. Nebulizers are expensive, although insurance will usually cover the expense if a doctor says that their patient needs one. Humidifiers are OTC and relatively inexpensive. Ultrasonic humidifiers cost a bit more than regular ones, but can break the mist into smaller droplets that can penetrate more deeply into the lungs. Now dealing with bird lungs may be different as to whether the smaller droplets of mist penetrate more deeply or not.

I don't know why it wasn't on this chart that I "stole" from a website, but I assume, yes.

Yes it is.. all silkies are suppose to have a mulberry comb.
