Silkie thread!

Silkie piles are so warm!!  :)

So, I asked in another forum about egg laying but no one responded and I'm hoping to gain some wisdom from all you silkie lovers.
I have one sweet sweet black silkie that just started laying a few weeks ago.  Along with a barred rock and an australorp.  Yesterday I got 5 eggs from these 3 hens!!   Isn't that odd?  Or normal???  I had 4 the other day too...
Did you not collect them the day before?

Yes that would be a very rare occurrence, and one that I've never experienced. I've only had ONE perfect egg day in only one pen (4 hens laid 4 eggs) and I celebrated lol.

Had 4 Australorp eggs, 6 silkie eggs, and 4 leghorns start hatching tonight. These are our first ever silkies and watching the first 5 hatch was a trip! they looked like sewing machines zipping around their shells, and then...boom..they literally kicked off their shells. I have watched a lot of eggs hatch, but have never seen a shell bottom fly across the incubator! I am still waiting on the rest to zip out, and the leghorns are taking the longest to pip around. One question though...how many toes are silkies supposed to have?

Silkies should have 5 toes, but sometimes they will hatch with 4 or even 6. This would be a disqualification for showing and many folks won't breed a bird that does not have the correct number of toes.

Yes, I collect them everyday [and check more than once each day]!!

So odd.... Perhaps I should celebrate too!

Do you have kids, or a tricky spouse that is playing a prank?

Yeah! That would explain it. But he's been out of town the last few days!! Could it be related to the fact that they're all about 5 months old and therefore young and new with all the laying and hormonal signals? Ovulating all over the place, LOL, until their cycles even out???

Never had it happen before. I'd be lucky to get one a day from them.

I think Phyllis and Gretta are showing signs of coming into lay. Not for another month or so at least, but they are starting to egg song and whine like a hen does before they start! :yesss:

Hope they start soon for you! If I get any eggs today I'm entering those hens into Guinness!

Just got these three gals yesterday. They are just adorable. No names yet...trying to figure out their personalities. Was told they were around 6-8 weeks old.

The one on the right reminds me of Beaker on the Muppets.
I have a dark blue girl named Beaker. She looks like the muppet to. I also have a Colombian roo named Animal. All I have are silkies and love them. I started out with 6 in May or this year and now I have 13.

Just wanted to say HI! And that I just adopted a tiny baby silkie chick this morning. Will be raising him/her all by myself. I raised chicks before but this is my first silkie. So excited! Srry but I will properly introduce myself and the un named chick more later cause I start work in a bit. Just was too excited on getting a silkie that I had to post here really quick hahaha. Love all the cute pics!!!
Rob =)
Welcome to our thread, Rob! Can't wait for pictures of you baby!!
Lol, never even thought about that. I will try tomorrow.
I was surprised to find that the little ones in my flock were a weight more correct for the standard. :)

Five on each foot. Happy hatching!!
