Silkie thread!

I have a quick question.....I have a beautiful paint silkie that I would love to breed. the problem I am having is she has a crooked beak.We didn't notice it till she was bigger. Is it possible it would be passed on? None of the others we hatched have it. She is just so pretty and fluffy that we think she would make nice little babies.

If you test breed her, don't sell any chicks until they are mature enough to see if it passed on. How severe is her crooked beak? This is a tough call. Some people say it's genetic, some people say it's incubation related. If it is very slight, I would do a test breed. Especially if she is really good quality.

I have one that I found a pet home for because I didn't want to risk it.

Ours is pretty crooked. She is the only girl we have in this color.

I just think she's so pretty.

This is her with her sisters.

Quote: Only 2, and young at that, may not generate enough combined heat to keep them sufficiently warm. Where is the doghouse? How insulated it it? Can it be moved to a warmer location or better insulated? Adding a light for warmth could be helpful. There are outlet devices called thermocubes that act as a thermostat to turn power on when the temperature drops to a certain degree. http://www.thermocube.com/ I wish they made a hot weather one that is in between the two hot weather ones they do make. What are your current temperatures (lows and highs)? And how did the birds SEEM to react to being covered in frost? Were they shivery and obviously cold? Or pretty much ignoring it? Or ...?

Are there any "creamy yellow butterscotch" colored silkies?? I ask because we only had 1 baby Silkie hatch out of 8 or 9 Silkie eggs (and twice I thought it was dead), but it's yellowish? I mean...it's kind of like a buttercream frosting colored chick with light caramel colored parts here and there?? (it's yellow, but not "Yellow!" like a regular yellow chick.

nope, I can't provide a picture because I broke our camera - we do have the one we want on order though - should be here soon (couldn't buy it locally).
Sounds like wheaten colouring (girls only), or possibly champagne paints

What is cold to you Sonoran? 35? :p I'd take -20 over 100 degrees any day!

She is a Splash and a pretty girl.

For some reason I wrote paint even though I know she is a splash. I guess I need another cup of coffee.

We think she is very pretty. Of course we love ALL of our chickens. I do think that we favor our silkies, sizzles, and cochins the most though. But on the weekends and at bed time my kids and I go out and play with all our chickens. We make sure they all know how much we love them.
