I think it's a cute coop little house for them. I had igloos while I finished up the coop, but the Silkies didn't go in them, just piled outside. The other breeds of chickens figured it outAnyway, I kept them in when it was REALLY hot, and brought them in at night. That's just because I kept them in the house until they were 4 months old
. Finally let go, and they are sleeping outside. I lock them in a shed/converted coop at night. _Pam
How often does a crowing hen occur? My friend has a crowing silkie and it has NO comb and it doesn't look anything roostery at all! Shoudl it have a comb if it is crowing?Good Morning! A while back I was concerned about my newly crowing rooster having a "too small comb". Well, it turned out that BB was just a crowing hen (she started laying eggs the next week).
Ironically my other silkie hen (Mysty Blue) crows also. She is 8 months old and started crowing (that I know of) after starting to lay eggs. I bring in the roosters every morning at 6:30AM and often hear Mysty Blue outside attempting to fill their shoes. Her "crow" is very weak so I'm sure the neighbors don't hear her. BB's "crow" was much louder and she almost got herself re-homed until we realized she was a hen. I think they do this because they hear my silkie cockerels crow and want to be the "top chicken" in the flock. BB and Mysty Blue are a couple months older than my 2 splash cockerels. Wish I could help. So sorry you are faced with this.I have no idea, I have been reading for hours and it seems that lice, and mites can make a chicken not want to stand, along with several other things such as mareks... I am really worried that I will have to put her down... I am very upset, she is one of my favorites!!
Really cute photos!
I bet this is one spoiled chick!
Really nice bator and brooder!! My husband built mine for me and I just love it! I call it my "cat TV"! That is the best hatch I've ever heard of from shipped eggs!!I got my ideas from others here on this site. don't know why some of the pics loaded up sideways. I spent a pretty penny building it, but its better than store bought in my opinion. last hatch was 25 of 28 eggs, silkie anyways, I have had trouble with other chicks. think it must be my other chickens eggs/fertile.

My large fowl free range with toad stools. They never eat them. Silkies are even pickier.Should I not let my girls free range if there are mushrooms in my yard? It has been really rainy and there are some large mushrooms popping up so I haven't let them roam for fear they may eat them. Would they be toxic?
This is not unusually big. Cute photo!Good Morning! A while back I was concerned about my newly crowing rooster having a "too small comb". Well, it turned out that BB was just a crowing hen (she started laying eggs the next week).
Now, I'm wondering what to do if a rooster's comb is "too big"? My splash cockerel/rooster is getting such a big "honker" on him. I fear between the comb and crest, his eyesight may be blocked? It really looks like a walnut glued to his head....poor guy. But very handsome in the Silkie-World, I'm sure!Should I pluck the feathers around his comb and eye area? We probably will show him in 2013 if he continues to develop nicely. I'll post a picture of him. Leo Pierre is such a sweetie and has the calmest temperament. My son could even use him in kids' showmanship, but I want to enter him in the adult competitions............so we'll see.![]()
Here is a closeup of Leo Pierre's walnut comb. He is about 6 months old (with a lot of maturing yet to go)
And, this photo was just for fun. I put our newest "splash chick" beside Leo Pierre just to see the size comparison. They grow up so fast.![]()

X2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Whoot!!!!!!!! Congrats!![]()
I used to be a late sleeper-LOL!We are late sleepers. Having Percy in the house so long (the Showgirl, the only one that crows) you'd think he would wake us up. Nope. He's a late sleeper, too. He doesn't start crowing until 11:00 A.M! Awesome. He's outside now, but still keeps his late morning hrs.Pam![]()
No, I'm glad Leo Pierre's comb is big and growing. My concern is whether or not I should pluck or cut feathers in front of his eyes. He seems to get around and find everything OK...so maybe I should leave it alone? This is not unusually big. Cute photo!
