thanks but will that be good for the hen? feeding them medicated chick starter? she usually gets organic layer whole grains...should I put out the organic grower instead and put it through the blender?

the blinder idea would work an no medicated feed isnt going hert the hen

yes it's actually been recommended to feed grower to all silkies and just provide oyster shells for them to eat as needed.

I decided to go ahead and leave the baby with the moms. I'm not sure but it looks like maybe another egg had a little crack in it. I couldn't tell if it was starting or if it was just a little piece of shell from the one that hatched was sticking to it.

My cousin will be staying here with them until I get back on Sunday but rather than take chances on over/under heating with a heat lamp thought it would be best. I left some medicated chick starter up next to the nest with fresh water (in one of the little bottle chick waterers) and in the bottom of the coop I left more water with the regular egg layer crumble that the girls normally get. I put the third silkie hen, that is normally in with the other two, in with my other hens. (Normally the silkies get free run of the yard during the day and go into the little coop at night while the other chickens stay in a large pen during the day and the big coop at night.)

Anyway - thank you for responding. I feel a little more comfortable leaving them now. =-)

on the broody topic...I have just had one hatch out some chicks...have never had one before...what type of food should I put our for them with the momma...do I need to put a heat lamp in the garage for them?

yes it did read that here and I hav actually cancelled my orders for layer and changed it to grower and have put out oyster shell for them but they don't seem to like or eat that at the moment...that conversation on here was a good one about what people feed their silkies...interesting and informative

the blender is a pain in the butt and messy but of course we will do anything for my girls...I think i prefer to give them organic grower so momma and chicks can eat the same thing...i always move the chicks over to grower anyway after a month or so...

In very cold, I give a heat lamp just in case a baby wanders out from Mama, but most of the time other than real winter, Mama takes care of it all.

ok thanks...I was worried last night as a baby just hatched and was sitting just to the front of the momma peeping so I ran around and put on a heat lamp for them...but when i went and checked on them she had it all under control...they are in the walk-out basement so it really is not that cold in there but I wanted it to be comfortable and have the chicks running around so i can see them ...lol

they are still hatching and it is hard to get a pic at the moment... but dont worry i am the king of taking pics of my chickens...lol
