Silkie thread!

I didn't know organic could have GMO, Wow I didn't realize it wouldn't have protien. I won't be buying it again the chickens refused to eat it today. Thanks so much for this information. I did see some bags that said all natural I think it was purina. I'll have to check it out and see if its GMO free. If not ill check out king-brand.com

I guess it just depends on the company and feed....always go and research the company and what they put in their blends...my organic has a minimum of 19% protein in the starter and grower, no soy, and no GMO grains...just depends on what you can get...I wish I could find find something cheaper and still suitable...I know mine won't eat pellets...good luck...

On silkie cloud nine. I just had 10 silkies given to me on Friday and already have 11 eggs in 2 days, would have had 12 but one of the girls laid on the ramp and it busted. I just wanted to share some pictures of the new girls, no boys and my total is now 24. Gonna flood you all with pictures now. Love my silkies.

The 3 white girls

A broody buff out to eat

I know, not a silkie but she lays and my husband likes her

A nice blue girl, she is molting and lost most of her crest

2 of the white girls with 1 of the black girls

2 buff girls and 2 wheaton based partridge girls

Love this black girls crest

This is the sweetest little girl but she doesn't get around very well by herself. I think I am starting to like the whites. Sorry for all the pictures but I just had to share.

Congrats! Hit the Silkie motherload! Beautiful! I'm starting to really like the black ones.

Yes, I'm going to do some research on line. They don't seem to really know at the feed store. I don't have to have organic I just don't want the GMO. I was worried about the pellets too, I just thought I would soak them and make a mash. It doesn't look as good as the old feed to me even. They look at me like your kidding right? Where's the good stuff. Lol
And I'm still choking on the price I paid. Back to the feed store tomorrow in hopes to find something good. I feel bad for them they don't want to eat it.

All so pretty!!
Really unique and so pretty!  Are those laced feathers silkied? They look like regular feathers....
They are just like silkie feathers, not like a regular chicken at all. I've never seen one like this and hope she passes it on. My silkies are just pets for now, can't decide if I want to try to show yet. Just enjoying them as pets.

Quote: if you want a lot colors i would breed blue, black, and splash

Quote: I agree that b,b,s is a good pen for variety of colors. And if you want a range of colorful chicks get 3 hens ( 1 each of b,b,s) and try to get a blue rooster. Any other colors need to have their own pens; for example white hens need to be bred to a white rooster.
What would happen if you had a white silkie with splash? I'm just thinking if we get b/b/s and a white sometime in the future. (Son wants silkies, but not a buff/partridge since his died and just wanting to put into the back of my mind possible colors to suggest to him.)

Quote: To furthwer elaborate this, with a white you have no way of knowing what colour or pattern genes the white is hiding. White is an OFF switch that prevents the colour/pattern genes that are present in the bird from showing. EVERY white can be different, so there is no way to predict what the white parent will bring to the mix.

You know with a splash parent that the offspring WILL carry the blue gene, and with a blue parent, they have a 50% chance of carrying it. You just do not know what that particular white parent will add.
