Silkie thread!

No it doesn't. They in fact need grit to digest that scratch. They wouldn't need grit with just flock raiser and oyster shell, but if you add whole grains, they do need grit. If free ranged, they should find their own. My silkies are a little dumb in that department. I sprinkle grit where they can see it.

Thanks! They're run is pretty much pecked over, so I'll get some grit when I get the flock raiser- it's an hour away! I'm going to ask my feed store to order it for me. They only have layer and meat bird stuff. I think I'll give them scratch on the side, maybe the grains will help keep them warm this winter ( a little bit ) Plus, I have a whole big bag of it.

I think the activity of scratching around for it keeps them warmer than the actual scratch does.

Try warm oatmeal. That is the best way to warm 'em up!

Not partridge. See the silver hackles? Partridge have gold or red hackles.

What about silver partridge or gray, what would it be considered? I am curious because I have two that I call silver partridge but they were hatched from eggs that came from a project paint pen. (They both had the chipmunk colored markings as chicks.) One of them is my avatar.

Thanks guys, I thought that might be the case but the guy who is my friends boyfriend has raised brahma's (sp?) and americauna's and admittedly is not a silkie expert but it got me thinking! My chickens come from great lines but as someone so wisely said they are your hatch not the breeder you got them from. So I could introduce my hen and one chick back to the flock at four weeks? I wondered if my roo would be gentle with a new baby??? Thanks again peep blessed, km and aoxa!

Definitely depends on what breeds. I don't mix my silkies with LF. My roos have always been great with chicks but I hear some aren't. It's the mom's I have the biggest problem with. The younger the chicks the more protective the mom.

Help!! My white silkie decided he needed a mud bath!!! Silly boy, now he looks paint!

I need advice on cleaning him up. I am planning on giving him a bath sometime this weekend, not sure why as he will probably just get dirty again!! What is the best way to bath them? Like a cat or dog or are there tricks to it?

Bad Fred!
