Silkie thread!

Thanks guys! I live in California but it does get down to the 30s here. I have the ability to heat my coop. My coop is warmer than my house. Should I wait until spring to hatch new silkies and some bantam easter eggers? I can get some eggs at the end of Jan.

Sorry guys, I didnt mean to hijack the thread, I probably should have started a new one (?)

This is a good place for your post. We only have silkie boys, so I can't speak to how they compare to other breeds. Our three guys get along pretty well, with a few squabbles thrown in daily. They remind me of teenage boys. One splash likes to grab the crest feathers of the other splash...who then screams and pulls back while the first one holds tight. Then...while those two are fussing, the black boy sneaks up behind them and pecks each one in the backside just for fun. Generally, my guys are pretty easy going and gentle. We will be introducing a fourth boy to the bachelor pad in a few weeks and will have to see how that works out. our Silkie boys are separated from the Silkie girls and then we have another egg layer flock.

If you were to hatch silkie chicks and raise a silkie roo, i think it may be possible to include him in the flock with your other existing rooster. However, my preference would be to separate the Sikies into their own flock. I've seen our large fowl hens turn quickly and peck another in the head....really HARD. This would not be good for a silkie.

Yeah thats why Im thinking of going with bantams to add to my flock. I was worried about having smaller birds because of hawks, but now Im covering my whole dang yard with bird netting because they came back so it doesnt matter now. I had to get rid of a chicken that turned out to be a rooster that was REALLY going after my white silkie. I also had to get rid of a plymouth rock that the silkie hatched and raised because it wouldnt stop picking on her. My other two plymouth rocks are better, one of them my new silkie avoids, but Molly gets along with everyone, shes a real sweetheart.

All my silkies roo have been quite nice to me. I caught them a few times chasing my LF, but nothing crazy.

Our guys are also gentle and let us hold them daily.

Should I wait until spring to hatch some more eggs when its a litttle warmer even tho I can heat my coop??

Hmmm....I'm hoping to hatch eggs this December, but I plan to keep the chicks in the house for the winter. If you have a broody hen or have a heated chick brooder that you can place in the coop...I would think hatching now could be fine. Just be sure to provide the necessary warmth. If you hatch by Xmas, you should be able to determine sex by May or June, in time for summer.
