My 5 month old silkie, Lola, got a crop impaction that we noticed about 4 days ago. The first night we simply let her roost and checked to see if her crop had emptied overnight. The next morning it was still full and hard, slightly smaller than a golf ball (the silkie is a bantam size I think...don’t know much about chickens) so we isolated her with just water and massaged her crop several times as well as getting a very small amount of coconut oil into her beak by putting chilled chips on the end. This was effective in causing her to expel watery green material, including what looked like grass, from her mouth several times that day. The mass was almost gone by evening. The next morning (yesterday) the mass was mostly cleared. I could feel a little tiny lump only. Lola had never acted sick and was really frantic to eat so I gave her a teaspoon full of yogurt, but she only took a couple of tastes. I added some water with ACV to her pen, waited a couple of hours. She expelled a bit more water and crop material. I could only feel a really tiny bulge in her crop and she was still quite upset about no breakfast, so I gave her about an ounce of scrambled egg saturated in coconut oil. She ate it right up. Last night I could feel that her crop was slightly doughy but still very small, so I gave her another ounce of scrambled egg with coconut oil as well as a teaspoon full of yogurt with applesauce mixed in so she would eat it. This morning she had expelled a pretty good sized amount of liquid and crop material. She has been pooping normally until yesterday but of course she went well over 24 hours with no food so I thought that was to be expected. But after the eggs yesterday, she has only one tiny tiny poop this morning. I think her crop is normal this am according to my daughter in law but I haven’t checked it yet...will do so soon. My questions are: is it normal for her to keep expelling through the mouth at this point or might she have an obstruction in her gizzard? Should she be pooping more and “vomiting “ less by now? Is she getting any nutrition if she’s expelling most of what’s going in (I think....it’s sort of hard to tell volume wise)? We are going into the weekend and I’m trying to decide if I should take her to the vet today to be safe, but it’s an hour each way and so stressful for her. I’m not sure I can even get a last minute appointment ...and she seems to feel great.
