Silkie with neck issues

I went out to feed my smaller birds this morning and one of the silkies wasn't moving. I picked her up and her neck starts violently swinging around her belly. I Held her neck high and it stopped moving but she can't put her head straight. I took her in the house and set her up with food and water. She can't eat food off the ground it has to be elevated and the same with the water(Large 49er coffee mug height seemed to do it). She is just in a small tub that isn't more than 6 inches high but she can't get out of it. Once she gets her head high she can keep it there but she is really struggling to lift it to that level.

Should I splint her neck straight or let her strenghen on her own? I can move her neck straight and she doesn't seem in pain. Please help!

Hi there,
I had the same thing happen to me..I was searching on the internet and found something that said that was caused from a hard peck to the head from another bird. It then gives them a little brain damage. I gave him a really good vitamin/mineral from Smith Poultry just like it said online and he came out of it. The article said that if the bird in the future gets excited or nervous this head under the belly thing will pop up now and then and they were right about that also. When we go to pick him up or another bird comes up to him quickly, he does it again and then within a minute he is back to normal again. So depending on how much damage was done , you should be able to somewhat fix that. I forget what vitamin it is in that mix that helps to treat the damage. But it does work!!

Ok, that makes sense. I have a momma and baby in there with the silkies, she can be vicious if you mess with her chick.

Do you remember where you found the mineral stuff?

OH also, not all pecks cause this...it is just in the Silkies as I understand, something about their skulls. I would have to read it again. I think Hatricksilkies might have a link on their website talking about the unique skull of a silkie..

Your silkie probably has wry neck... I have had a couple with this before. I give Polyvisol(childrens vitamins w/o iron) and Vitamin E..I takes a week or so sometimes, but it works...

I have her on a vitamin mineral supplement now that I got from the feed store. She gets better as the day goes but once she goes to sleep and wakes up again she starts thrashing.
