Silkies: Can I show these, breed them, or just keep as pets?

Thanks, guys! I am in NC (Hillsborough, whish is in the piedmont) and know there's someone near here who has some beautiful splash silkies they show...unfortunately, their birds are a little pricey for me. The person I'm getting the chicks from this Friday is west of me...can't remember the name of the town but it was around Mebane, NC. We'll get to look at the parents and pick out the chicks. Hoping I can figure this out a little more between now and then!

Thanks again, everybody! You guys are awesome!!!

Country You are probably 40 minutes from me. I live in Semora NC just outside of Roxboro by the VA line.

You really should make the trip to the show in Morganton NC this weekend, alot of silkie breeders and sale birds will be there! I will be attending to hang out with some of the awesome showers/breeders I know who will be there.

Hi neighbor!

I wish I could make it to the show--that sounds awesome! But, this weekend is kinda already quadruple booked with Halloween and kids' commitments. Guess I'll have to be there in spirit this time. If you see any ghostly spectres oohing and ahing the chickens, wave hi!

me personally wouldnt consider breeding with the white roo. i vote him as pet quality. the pullet yea she can be bred, and if you get another non bearded go for the black roo. just my opinion.

Yes I didn't comment after the 2nd pic on the rooster, I liked the hen in the 2nd picture, she has a smallish crest, but looks to have a nice rounded type, full beard, and if her feet and toes are good, I believe she'd make a good breeder, only real major fault I find with her is the hard tail feathers.

The rooster I would not breed either after seeing the 2nd picture. I would label him a pet as well as the black as I already stated.

yea her hard feathers are faulty lol, she wouldnt breed show babies but pet babies i believe

Good to know, guys! Thanks again for weighing in! I was on the fence whether to get some whites amongst the chicks I pick up (thinking maybe I already had a pair of whites to breed) but now...looks like I'm pretty much starting from scratch.

That's cool, these guys have been a great learning experience, and we luckily have lots of room both inside and out!

Hmmm...you must have mixed up my white pullet with some other chicken that's been hiding out in my yard and stealing feed! lol In the silkie dpt, I've only got ::drumroll, please:: two black roos (one whose pic didn't go up), one white roo, and one white pullet. And the funny part? The gal's not interested in any of the roos! Guess her verdict matches you alls--they don't make the cut!!!
