I won't be ready for chicks till probably spring, so I have quite a bit of time to find someone. Here's a question:
I'm needing a hen, so I'm gonna have to get her as a pullet. Can I put her in the same coop as Red Sex-link hens? Or will she need her own little coop?
If I was to get a cockerel should/could I put him in his own coop, so he doesn't fertilize my eggs?
This is my first time owning chickens and initially I was getting them just to have cute pets that gave me tasty fresh eggs but as I see more breeds on BYC, I'm forseeing this to be a hobby as well. There are so many different breeds, with so many different traits and featherings...I'm finding it hard not get a bunch of different hens. I'm staying away from roo's right now because I don't want him fertilizing the eggs and making more babies then I can't handle or house at the moment.
I just spoke with Bobbi Porter from IndigoEgg, she lives about 30 minutes from me, she invited me over to her farm this weekend or next. She seems like a very nice person and I can't wait to see her flock. She also has fainting goats which a plus, since we were planning on getting some next spring/summer

my silkie roo is with my red sexlinks and white leghorn, yea he fertilize the eggs but the sexlinks and leghorn wont sit on them, they dont go broody, to put the pullet with the red sexlinks you'll have to be careful, dont want them to bully her. but ive heard people have their silkies in a mix flock

Thanks for the reply...I'll just have to be careful and keep an eye on things. Luckily my home office faces the coop, so I can make sure there's no funny business going on...lol!

I want fainting goats - they're cool! I love my Silkies and I'm a novice chicken addict. I also love all the dog / chicken photos! My cocker spaniel really wants to get the chickens so I have some training to do...
