Silkies from MPC

I agree. My first order with them was horendous. But, I didn't know of any other hatcheries at that time that would do such small numbers, so I ended up ordering from them again. I have ordered several times, and in my experience, they have been very accurate in sexing chicks.

I placed an order the other day for 9 - day olds (BLRW, BCM, Speckeld Sussex - 3 of each) I know that these are large fowl and not silkies. But I've recently gotten bit by the banty bug and want to order a few different breeds of them. I want to get about 6 or 8 silkies.
Everyone that has ordered them from MPC, are you happy with them? I read good thems about them thus far.
Kari_Dawn: you said that your 1st order was horendous, did they fix the problem? The order I listed above is my 1st internet order and they will not arrive until May, so I want to order my silkies/other breeds but I'm still causious about doing it. I've heard that MPC is great to deal with if something goes wrong. Any advise?

MPC works through Meyer Hatchery. I'm not sure whether they provide their own bird sexers or not though, as Meyer did not offer sexing for bantams in the past (although maybe they do now???). I've ordered silkie pullets from MPC (as well as numerous LF breeds). Out of all the birds I've ordered from them, LF and bantam, one silkie was incorrectly sexed...an adorable little partridge. It's probably just coincidence, but I know of another person who ended up with a silkie cockerel from them (in a pullet order) that was partridge too. Made me wonder if partridge were more difficult to vent sex for some reason - probably just coincidence. The MPC staff is very easy to work with in my experience. Being able to order breeds I want in small quantities, with little risk of ending up with roos is definitely worth the shipping costs to me...

Honestly, the reason I do not really count that first time fluke is because I did not really ask them to fix it. I was so upest I decided to cut my losses and just get rid of all of the roosters. I ordered 2 slw pullets, both turned out to be roos, 2 welsummer pullets, one was weak, and died within four days, and MPC did not help though I asked. The other turned out to be a roo. 2 australorps, one was always really scraggly and weak, and died at about 5 weeks. The other turned out to be a roo. I also ordered two jersey giants and two buff orpingtons, both pairs of which I rehomed before I knew so many would turn out to be roosters. Basically, I spent a lot of money and ended up with nothing. I cannot really complain, as I did not ask MPC to credit me for the roosters, though I AM upset they did not offer assistance with my weak chick though they state they do so. Since she died, and her death was reported after the 48 hr period, they did nothing about it, and the welsummer chicks were NOT cheap. I did not even bother telling them about the australorp because of my experience with the welsummer. They are really lucky they are the only hatchery I knew of that did small orders or they would NOT have gotten my repeat buisness.

However, in the subsequent orders (a total of four), they have been VERY good, and have had great customer service. I have no idea what was up with the first batch of birds or the people I talked to that first time. Since then, I have ordered two salmon faverolles, and two buff orpingtons, and lost one of each within the 48 hr period, and was credited for both birds, and as of yet, have not recieved another rooster, and have ordered a total of more than 20 birds from them. I am giving my birds another week or two to develop. I currently have 14 young birds from them, and suspect a rooster or two. I will let you know what MPC does if they are...though they may consider it within their parameters of the 90% accuracy they guarantee.

So why did I give them my business again? Well, I lost my flock to a predator, and couldn't be without a few chickens. I did not know of any other small order number hatchery that did not include packing peanuts (whats the point of spending my money on sexed pullets if they are going to include males of breeds I don't even want?).

I am very happy with my purchase from My Pet Chicken. I ordered 7 chickens, 1 rooster and 6 pullets. I did end up with 5 pullets and 2 roosters, but all are healthy and the customer service was great (email and phone) I definitely consider ordering from them again. These were all standard sized chicks.

I ordered 16 from MPC and all 16 were female. And about shipping, isn't it god awful? I live in the same area and I had to order 2 batches of chicks in September and October.. was $36.50 per shipment. My total was like $148.50 and half of that was shipping. That's what I get for ordering late in the season.
