Silkies: love them or hate them?

Yes. If you can hear him, your roo can hear him. If your roo has ladies he is trying to impress, the competition will begin. If you only have the roo and no hens, it may be a whole different story. Males vocalize to attract and keep females. If you have no females...well I've never been in that position, but I would think he wouldn't have much to crow about?

i dont think so, when ever i seperate my rooster (to hold) he'll crow a million times, like hes trying to find his ladies

I've never kept Silkies before, but I've heard that they have their pros and they have their cons. Pros would be their broodiness and their tame nature with people. Cons would be their crests (which blind them to predators, especially aerial ones) and their fluffy feet (which keep them from running away from predators). Personally, if you're a beginner, I would recommend a more free-range prone breed that does well on the range and doesn't have any fluffy feet or crests. Breeds I would recommend are the Kraienkoppe, Russian Orloff, Leghorn, and Wyandottes.

I was hoping they where not loud because i was planing on getting one but i can't have a loud roster because my parents hate to hear them crow. :hit
But thanks for telling me before I got one.

I would not get just one if you have other breeds. My poor little boy is lonely and no one will be his friend. He just hangs out by himself. Mine doesn't crow, probably because he is smart and saw what happened to the marans rooster, getting chased by those mean little bossy D'Uccle boys.

I have mosty black star bantams so i don't think he would get lonly.

It isn't about size, it's temperament. Silkies need silkie friends with which to form their own silkie sub flock. I've never had black star bantams, but i've had LF black stars, an they are a bit aggressive- so I would definitely get at least two, better yet three or more. I'm so sorry, but you must have more chickens... oh aren't you so sad?

I was considering getting a Silkie/ Serama mix from a friend of mine, and I am curious as to whether or not it will be loud. My neighbors always seem to get annoyed when I have an especially loud rooster, and they aren't afraid to tell me..........

Silkies are one of my favorite breeds ever! They're kind of fragile tho, they can't really be let to free range, because they can't fly and the poofs on their heads block a it of their view! They are a very sweet breed, the roosters are prone to taking care of chicks, and the hens are very broody. Some people use them to hatch eggs!

My two blackstar bantams are realy nice but i was hoping he whould be ok with the bantomes and my two road isaland , barbed rock hen, and mysilver laced hen. my old roster we had to kill he is my profile pic. we had to kill him because he would not stop leading are chikens out of are yard. I have been sad becuase I have not had a roster to get fertile eggs from to hatch in my incubator. I think he would be ok with all my hens. He would be the only roster so I think he would be fine with all the hen by him.
