I have a question, so my two hens that I thought were going broody are not. They have been off the nest for hours. They were making all the noises that a broody makes but it probably was too hot for them to stick with it. They also have yet to pluck their chest feathers. My question is should I put the eggs in the incubator since they were sat on for maybe an hour to two hours? I did want to do a hatch this week and I was going to set them Thursday but should pull out the incubator and set them today?

Hens do that all of the time. The eggs are just fine. Some times I start the process with the incubator and then let the hen finish the incubation. Less stress on the hen since they sit for less days

I just love them. I have 3 black ( 1frizzle, 1 satin,1 regular) 2 partridge, 1 buff and 2 white. They all have different personalities.

Collected up chicks from a mixed pen to check feet and discard shells. Still some eggs to hatch in there. Father is a partridge silkie. Mothers are partridge silkie, cochin/silkie, and cochin/silkie (with some ameraucana in their background). So some of these should lay blue eggs.

Ohww so cute! Can't wait the many months till you find out what colours they look like and if some lay blue eggs! I'd love some Silkie look alikes laying blue!

Hmm.. so I've never done this, but what about a little basket with a little bit of shavings in it? Then they can't sink or slide out, and mama should be able to sit in it comfortably. 🤔
Chickaletta always digs a super deep nest so needs lots of beddings or she'll scratch to the ground and eggs crack. I have tried a nest box but have had trouble with the hens not liking it and prefer on the ground 🤷 and chicks falling out and can't get back in 😟 So I went to just lots of beddings in a small coop so they can make their own nest. I use sand at the base, straw mostly and some shavings to help the chicks balance better as straw is difficult for them to walk on with bits sticking up.

By Luck, I have become a Silkie breeder. They took over the coop by way of being the Healthiest bunch and reproduced like mice. The more expensive breeds I had just could not pick up so now I only keep Silkies.

Some pics of them.

Recessive White cockerel(6 month of age), he is Supposed to be White but he shows lots of cream colors on tail, hackle and saddle.
