Oh I see! Well perhaps that policy is only for those of us random Silkie buyers she doesn’t trust with her babies! 😆 Her website says she doesn’t ship eggs, so I just assumed! Haha. She definitely loves her silkies! Her satins are gorgeous too!
Yeah must have to be a friend of a friend of a friend lol...but hey I get it! Between her and Lauren Taylor babies I wouldn't trust just anybody either!

If you cross a blue with a red you'll probably get blue and black chicks that will likely have leakage later on (assuming the blue doesn't have certain recessives hiding). They could be good for a splash calico project but very bad for a BBS pen as you really want to keep anything with red out of BBS as that red is hard to breed out.

can you tell me more about splash calico. what would I need to start with? I have a blue hen, silver black roos and might be able to get red hens. there are splash silkies around, I might get some.

Oh hmm maybe it is an older policy and she didn't update that website? Here is her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CaliforniaCountryRanchPoultryAndWaterfowl it has all the details about getting eggs from her. Looks like just hens choice but she tries to get you the colors you most want out of what is available if she can. :)

Sure. 😁

It's not a recognized color and is basically just splash with red leakage that lends to a tri color appearance hence the term splash calico. It can look really pretty and there are definitely people interested in the color but there are others who don't take it very seriously just seeing it as a faulty splash.

I'm not sure about the best way to go about creating it but in theory crossing red to splash or blue should be a good start. You want to get as much red leakage as you can into them but breed back to the splash color. It's probably going to be a bit of a process getting back to splash and keeping a good amount of that red brought in by the red parent. The first generation of red crossed with blue or splash I'd keep the blue chicks hatched and try breeding them together. You'd get multiple colors from that crossing but the ones that turn out splash are going to tell you if you are going in the right direction and have enough red bred in or if you need to breed the f2 splash babies back to a red and repeat the first step. I hear from breeders working on it that it is a tricky color.

I'm working on it myself but am just starting. I've got some splash babies with a very little bit of leakage now but I think I'll have to breed them back to a red to get more red leakage.

thanks. I don't need exhibition quality, just eye candy. a friend of mine had a few years ago black and red silkies in the same coop. he hatched beautiful red/black chicks. I guess splash calico would be even more beautiful.

Speaking of eye candy...
Idk bout all yall but when "scrolling" through and seeing so many gorgeous babies I can easily get sidetracked and forget what eye candy is out in my backyard!
DH went to put Joey down in small run for me cuz I did way too much past 2 days and my babies were all sitting on the brooder in big run lookin at him like "hey where's my gamma!? Who you?"
The d'uccles were sitting there PICTURE PERFECT!!!
Just wanna enjoy what I got more and stop "wanting" more all the time...
but I still need to do some more hatches!
ok dont judge me lol
not my fault
I have a definite problem!!!
