So hybrid chicks number 11 and 12 have hatched. Number 11 is the 11th Olive egger/silkie hybrid that has hatched. Number 12 hatched today and is the first of 3 that are half splash ameraucana and half white silkie. She is just stunning with the silvery color. Not sure what to call her. Light blue? Based on the genetics I could figure out from this pairing should be either splash or blue. This one almost looks lavender but genetically that’s impossible.
Maybe she is splash? Though the splash I have had in the past have been almost white at hatch.
My daughter was being “artistic“ with these photos!
In any event planning to keep this one. 🥰

Are these from pullet eggs?

oh nice! I recently purchased eggs from a seller to CA who has been doing that for years. Whispering oaks I think it was called. But I was definitely disappointed that the eggs colors they were hatching from were so pale (colored). That they almost just looked creme. Of course after she did the cross she kept breeding back to Silkie to get more of the Silkie look (not smooth feathers) back. The birds ended up looking like pet silkies and haven’t laid yet. Interesting project.
I know mypetchicken also sells a “silkies Easter Egger”. I wonder what the bird actually grows up to look like and what color they lay. I was thinking of trying it small scale on my own. Good luck with your project!

Thanks! The little silver chick is from a pullet that had only been laying for about a month. The first set of hers were all infertile, but then I put this single one in the incubator just to see what would happen! I have 2 more of hers on day 14 of incubation (Christmas hatch) that all still look good. The olive egger crosses were from a hen. She lays really gorgeous olive eggs. From what I could figure out, half of these pullets will lay a lighter olive color and half will lay a medium brown.
😊

Thanks! I have heard of people that are trying to breed a true blue egg laying silkie.
For me it was really more of an experiment than a project, but you never know! Just keeping two of them, one of the olive egger babies and this little silver. My ameraucana pullet lays very pale aqua eggs, so I do not have great expectations for egg color from her chicks! 😊

Aww they are adorable! My guess would be the one little one is probably a light blue. I'm sure when the wing feathers start coming in more that'll give you a good idea though! :D

YES, SILKIES ARE SPECTACULAR! (As it says in my name) I have one Silkie named Elsa and she is the cutest thing. She is the leader hen in my flock, until we get a rooster. She is my only chicken who doesn't have clipped wings, where we got them from they had them, and she flys around. I really love silkies. They are really cute!
Elsa sounds awesome!
You came to the right thread then! 🥰
