Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

Well 5 toes on each foot is the norm. But I have hatched some with 4 on one foot, 5 on the other. This is the first time with 6! It is not unheard of, but I guess not totally uncommon either.
This little one has six toes on each foot. On the right foot they’re clearly delineated. On the left foot two of them are fused together. Does not seem to interfere with her ability whatsoever to walk.View attachment 2649283View attachment 2649284View attachment 2649285

I'm fascinated by the feet of silkies. I always watch the feet of my babies with fascination. They look so strong. So 'grounded'. I love when they stretch their feet backwards and I can see their footsoles. All those little cushions as on the picture of your little one.
My Roberta for example has got greenish footsoles. It always makes me smile to see them.

Thanks! I am so glad that Blue is alive. She was too weak to even hatch by herself and just about survived- she is so strong. I am so proud of her! Her siblings were so helpful and kind to her.View attachment 2649303

I'm also in the process of building a coop for little flock.
I was incredibly lucky and could purchase a with love handcrafted little woodhouse on wheels (it was originally build for a woman soccer team and carnival) which I will remodel as bachelor pad coop - or, if Sindbad will be my only rooster or there only will be one more other male (yes you all can laugh at me to think this could be possible ) it will be the broody-house.

I'm planning to build a coop a bit lifted (about 50 cm = 1,7 feet) from the ground so the silkies can use the room under it as a safe, dry space. I often read they don't like to walk on ramps - I wanted to ask all of you about your experiences with this.

Is it a bad idea to build them a coop that is a bit higher from the ground?

Nice to have the space underneath. They seem to like that.
Mine have no trouble navigating a ramp, as long as it is not too steep. I also keep the feathers trimmed a bit from their eyes so they can see well enough.

I currently have a 6 week old silkie.... she's almost perfectly spherical in fluff which is adorable but she doesn't seem to be getting any grownup feather.... or they're just so darn floofy I can't tell what's baby feathers and what's not... What d'yall reckon? She sunbathes with a leg and a wing stuck out to the side, she's so fabulous.

Sorry I can't be of any help about the feathers - my silkies are now 4 weeks old and I don't have any experience how they look or should look with 6 weeks.
I would love to see pictures from your little girl!

AWW what a cutie!! I'll try and get a photo of her, she's notoriously difficult to photograph because she's quite timid and runs off, yours looks a fair bit bigger than she does though

Thanks! She is not really very big, just a close up photo and she is in a small cage. She might be a little bit older, I bought her 3 weeks ago and was told she was a month old, but she only looked to be 2-3 weeks old at the time. The seller was not really sure.
