First and foremost - ABSOLUTELY NO HATING ON SILKIES ALLOWED!!! If you aren’t here to support our fuzzy friends, don’t respond. :)

Silkies get a bad rap for the following:
"Looks like a dust mop"
"Too hard to maintain"
"Poor immune system"
"Dumber than rocks"
"0 predator awareness"
And oh, so much more.

Well my friends - I thought so too, until I actually got silkies for myself. These are some of the most wonderful birds out there.

I’ve found them to be highly heat tolerant, wonderful mothers, having the strongest immune systems in my Bantam flock, GREAT LAYERS (that’s right folks), adorable as all get out, and more. :D

I currently have 9 silkies - and my rooster has been nothing but a gentleman to his ladies. They free range daily and I’ve not had a silkie get killed by a predator yet. My hens average 5 eggs a week - not too bad for a silkie, eh? :)

Most of the time, these silkie haters haven’t even owned the breed, but rather pretend they know everything.

So... let the fun begin! Support our silkies! :woot

Pictures always welcome. :)

Be mindful, and respect others...

Off-topic discussions are allowed, though try to maintain the subject of silkies.

Easter is a tough one for sure! I still can't tell... The comb would scream boy if I didn't know your flock has some larger comb genetics. The crest does look more girly right now and overall stance also looks more feminine to me too. My little guys who are just a bit younger are just starting to get streamers and the little silver partridge who I am sure is male just started getting some red spots on his wings as well. If Easter is a boy I guess he is a bit slower to develop than mine. I'd give it some more time.....I'm still leaning towards boy due to the comb size and the bit of red you mentioned coming in but there is nothing that really confirms it yet and he/she does have pullet like traits as well.

Sorry I'm not much help....
Thanks for your input! .. always hard to wait for Silkies gender to reveal. Although some are easily guessed early, this one is not!

My hen seems to have given up on egg laying. She stopped a few weeks ago, then layed 1 egg then stopped again. Anyone have experience with this?

How old? ..sometimes my 9year old lays a random egg and sometimes lays a few in a row and then has a break then lays a 1 or a few more in a row. .. If not old, stress related? Plenty food and water and space? Maybe sickness, hard to tell with chickens since they like to hide it as much as possible.

Just over a year old. There are 2 feeders and 2 drinkers so she has plenty of food, and she is let out into the garden every afternoon (unless rainy).
Yesterday, I saw her sitting in the nest box for a few minutes but she came out and no egg. I've tried feeling for one but I didn't feel an egg
Have you kept record of what eggs she does lay? How many?.. they usually lay less as they age, but yours is only young.... or maybe on the verge of broody or pretending to lay? Occasionally some of my hens go in to the nest and pretend to lay and sing a song but don't lay... 🤔 strange ... Enough calcium in her diet?- one of mine lays long eggs and struggles sometimes I have to give her extra supplement in water then she's ok.. I provide shell on the side. .. hopefully others can chip in and help with more informative advice for you..

I don't keep a record of her egg laying. She used to do 1 egg every day/ or every other day. She eats Poultry Gold feed. I haven't been putting oyster shell out because they don't eat it, should I put some out?
A few weeks ago she was acting strange and I thought she was egg-bound but 2 days later she layed an egg and started acting normal again.

If it were me I'd start with poultry vitamin supplement in water to see if it helps... I don't know poultry gold, is it layer feed? If not then they need calcium supplement like shell on the side, just crush up their egg shells, after you have used the egg of course, and put it in a separate container beside the feeder... Doesn't hurt to have crushed shell on the side on offer even if you feed layer.
