Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

We have a few people on here who are great with silkie genetics, and as @LadiesAndJane explained to me, it is a legit recessive gene in silkies. I also have a straight comb silkie, from a high end breeder, who breeds only silkies.

What about other indicators? Feet and skin black? Nice fluff? Pics? (We love pics!!)

I will try to post images of all 6 of my silkie chicks later today. Other than the straight combs, by what I can tell they have all the other traits (black skin, 5 toes and silkie feathering). Thank you for this info @AngBantamLuv

I have a question, I have 2 silkie chicks out of 6 we got a few months ago that do not have walnut combs. They seem to have straight combs. They are from Hoover Hatchery. Does this mean they're no purebred? Can I rightfully sell there eggs when they are old enough as silkie hatching eggs? Thx,

Hatchery silkies aren't the best quality at all. They lack fluff and body shape usually. Not to Standard of Perfection. Also the only people aggressive silkie I ever had was from a hatchery.

Straight comb is recessive. It hides and can sometimes pop up anywhere even with best breeding. It's a disqualification in silkies and shouldn't be bred. That said, in my experience, a rather large number of hatchery silkies have it.

Hatcheries don't care what the birds look like, they only care how many they can hatch and sell. On any animal we should strive to improve the breed.

Speaking of roosting Silkies, I had to move a (non-Silkie) broody from the goat house into the coop last night and discovered my lone Silkie has decided to be part of Team Roost all of a sudden. She used to sleep in a ground level nesting box but has seemingly decided she'd rather be off the ground now (or maybe she just finally discovered the ramp, who knows... )

Last night 5 have hatched so far out of 8. A few maybe a week younger as I had found additional eggs under her when I got back so I have a broody backup at the ready to take over.
She got off for a quick poopand I snapped a pic!

Unfortunately 1 of the 2 chicks that hatched a few weeks ago got pecked today while out foraging with mumma hen I was just in the coop when I heard a squeal and saw the chick half alive stumbling. I think it may have been one of my roosters nearby they all seemed ok when I let mumma hen out with her 2 chicks yesterday so maybe an accident. One of my kids gave it a final hold before I put it out of its suffering

At least I have 5+ chicks hatch now so the single chick will have some friends around the same age.
